St. Cloud State University Director of Athletics Dr. Morris Kurtz announced August 9th that Brian Sebera will serve as the interim head men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach for the 2011-12 season.
Sebera replaces Seth Mischke who resigned to take the head men’s and women’s track and field coach position at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D.
A former sprinter for the Huskies, Sebera has spent the last six seasons coaching the St. Cloud State men’s and women’s sprinters. He has coached five NCAA Division II All-Americans, six North Central Conference Champions, two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Champions and many All-NCC and All-NSIC finishers.
As a runner for the Huskies, Sebera ran the 100 and 200 meter races and relays. He spent three seasons on the
track team before an injury derailed his return to the track.
A native of Uganda, Africa, Sebera moved with his family as a child to Toronto, Ontario in Canada. He moved to Minnesota to attend St. Cloud State University where he completed his bachelor’s degree in sport management and therapeutic recreation (2005) and master’s degree in sport management (2007). He is currently working on an Ed. D. in Higher Education Administration (2011).
Sebera resides in St. Cloud with his wife Brandy, daughter Aissa, and is expecting his second child this February.
Assistant Coach: Travis Zins (Throws)
Travis Zins comes to the athletic program as one of the best throwers in SCSU history and not surprisingly coaches the men's and women's throwers. He also serves as the strength and conditioning coach for the St. Cloud State athletic department.
A four-time national participant, he is also a four-time North Central Conference champion and two-time All-American in the shot put. He was the national runner up in the 2000 Division II Indoor National Championships and received All-NCC honors numerous times in the shot put, discus, hammer, and weight throw.
A native of Nicollet, Minn., Zins received his bachelor’s of science in physical education in 2002 from SCSU and is currently working towards his master’s of science in exercise science from SCSU.
Zins, his wife Stacie and daughter Caylin, reside in Waite Park, Minn.
Assistant Coach: Travis Hoover (Cross Country and Distance)
A former distance runner for the Huskies, Travis Hoover is in his fourth season as a Cross Country and Track coach for SCSU. In Hoover’s short tenure as an assistant he has coached 1 NCAA Division II All-American, 2 National Qualifiers, 3 NSIC Conference Champs and numerous All-Conference finishers.
As a runner for the Huskies, Travis ran cross country and the long distances in track before a cycling accident following his junior year derailed and eventually ended his collegiate career.
A native of St. Cloud, MN, Travis has a bachelor’s in English from SCSU (2005), and is currently working on completing a Master’s degree in Sports Management from St. Cloud State (2012).
VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH: Jen Hensel
Jen Hensel is in her second year of volunteering with the Husky track and field team. She focuses her expertise in the area of pole vault.
Hensel is a 2009 graduate from Minnesota State University Moorhead where she was a member of the Dragon's track and field team and competed as a sprinter/pole vaulter.
As a Dragon, Hensel helped draw attention to MSU Moorhead by competing in eight National Championships. She was an eight-time All-American and Academic All-American in the pole vault; she was the 2007 and 2008 Outdoor DII National pole vault champion. This 16-time NSIC All-Conference member was very active on the track for four seasons with the Dragons.
A native of Frazee, Minn., Hensel recieved her bachelor's degree in physical and health education (2005) from MSU Moorhead. She is currently pursuing a master's in physical education at SCSU while working full-time as a physical and health education teacher at Stride Academy middle school in St. Cloud.
ASSISTANT COACH: Michael Coonen, Recruiting Coordinator (Sprints/Relays)
Michael Coonen is in his second year coaching the sprints/hurdles and relays at St. Cloud State University and his third coaching at the collegiate level. Last year with the Huskies in 2010-11, Coonen coached four NCAA DII National Meet Qualifiers. He also coached athletes to USTFCCCA All-North Central Region selections in the Indoor 60m and 200m, and the Outdoor 100m and 200m dashes.
Prior to SCSU, Coach Coonen was extremely successful as a graduate assistant with Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. He coached the National Runner-Up in the NCAA DII Indoor 200m dash. He coached three NCAA DII All-Americans, ten individual National Meet Qualifiers and one relay squad that qualified for Nationals. His men’s squad swept the sprint events at the 2010 MIAA Indoor Conference Championships. He coached his sprinters to two school records and ten ESU Top-Five all-time performances.
Coonen spent two years as an assistant coach with St. Cloud Technical High School in St. Cloud, Minn. His Tigers broke five Central Lakes Conference records, as well as eight school records. In his two years with Tech he qualified seven individuals and five relay teams for the Minnesota State High School League Track and Field Meet.
As an athlete for the SCSU Huskies, Coonen was a short-sprint specialist, running primarily the 100m, 200m and relays. He was a team captain both his junior and senior year. He was a five-time All-Conference selection in the now obsolete North Central Conference (NCC).
A native of Appleton, Wis., Coonen was a standout athlete at Xavier High School. He received his bachelor of science in athletic training in 2008 from St. Cloud State University and is currently working toward his master of science in athletic administration.

ASSISTANT COACH: Ben Held

Ben Held is in his second year coaching hurdlers and sprinters for the Huskies. Last spring he helped coach the Huskies to a second place finish in the Men's NSIC Outdoor Championships.
A former Husky track and field athlete, Held competed in the 60 meter high hurdles and the 110 meter high hurdles, earning First Team All-North Central Conference and All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference indoor and outdoor honors.
A native of Hinton, Iowa, Held was a standout athlete at Hinton Community High School. He is currently working on his bachelor's degree in Social Studies Education at St. Cloud State.
ASSISTANT COACH: Steve Milkovich
Milkovich joins the staff at SCSU in 2011-12. He most recently served as an assistant coach at Minnesota Duluth for two seasons. At UMD, Milkovich work with the team's long and triple jumpers. As a student at Minnesota Duluth, Milkovich was on the Bulldogs' track and field team for three seasons and he gained All-NCC honors in the triple jump (14.11 meters) as a college athlete. Milkovich received his B.S. in exercise science from Minnesota Duluth and he is currently working on his Master's in exercise science with a concentration in sports physiology at St. Cloud State University.
