St. Cloud, Minn. – Kelly Freese, St. Cloud State University’s junior tennis player, was recently named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District V Women’s At-Large First Team.
A native of St. Cloud, Freese sports a 3.86 grade point average in general biology. The junior tabbed a sensational 31-5 singles record in 2009, along with a 25-12 doubles mark. At the 2009 NSIC Individual Tournament on May 2-3, Freese (3rd singles) also won a singles crown.
Of note, for landing on the All-District V First Team, Freese will now advance to the All-America ballot.
The Huskies captured their first-ever NSIC conference title in 2009, which was also the first year that the Huskies have competed in the NSIC after making their move from the North Central Conference in 2008. SCSU finished the season with a 12-1 record in the highly competitive NSIC this season, and the Huskies claimed first place at the 2009 NSIC Team Tournament with a 3-0 record that included big wins over Bemidji State, Winona State and Minnesota State on April 25-26.
Overall, the Huskies posted a 26-9 record in 2009. SCSU qualified for NCAA Division II tournament play for the fifth time in team history this spring, and the Huskies also served as a first-round host for the NCAA Central Regional. SCSU bowed out of NCAA tournament play with a tough 5-4 loss to Montana State-Billings in the second round of the Central Regional on May 9. Of note, the Huskies set a new team record for most dual match wins in a season at 26.
The Huskies were led once again in 2009 by veteran coach Jerry Anderson, with assistance from Larry Sundby and Scott Johnson.
