WOMEN'S TENNIS: SCSU Claims More Titles at NSIC Tourney

The St. Cloud State University women's tennis dominated play at the 2009 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Individual Championships on May 2-3, in a tournament played at the Baseline Tennis Club in Minneapolis.
The Huskies gained first place finishes at second singles, third singles, fourth singles, sixth singles, second doubles and third doubles. SCSU also gained a second place finish at fifth singles and third place finishes at first singles and first doubles.
At second singles, Dawn Olsen gained a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sarah Madigan of Minnesota State Mankato to win top honors. At third singles, Kelly Freese gained a 6-2, 6-1 win in the title match against Cailey Grupa of Southwest Minnesota State. At fourth singles, Kayla Lenz rolled a 6-2, 6-2 win in the title match over Upper Iowa's Courtney Romer. To complete the singles title run, Samantha Boushek carded a 6-1, 6-1 win over Amy Erickson of Bemidji State at sixth singles.
In doubles play, Olsen and Eull won top NSIC honors at second singles, while Lenz and Tanya Halloran earned first place notice at third doubles. The complete tournament results for SCSU are listed below. Of note, no team scores were tallied for this tournament.
SCSU will host the upcoming 2009 NCAA Division II Central Regional tournament on May 8-9, at the Sartell High School Tennis Complex in nearby Sartell. The SCSU women's team is seeded number one in the regional and it will play the winner of the first round match between Minnesota State Mankato and Montana State-Billings. The SCSU men's team will also host NCAA Division II Central Regional play on May 8-9. SCSU will play the winner of the first round match between Western New Mexico and Minnesota State Mankato. Men's matches will begin at 10 a.m. each day, and the women's regional matches will start at 1 p.m. each day in Sartell.
