Katie Bruggemann set a pool record in the 200 breast on Friday against MSU Moorhead.

St. Cloud, Minn. – The State Cloud State swimming and diving team will not be competing this week, but will be competing against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a home-and-home meet on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30-31.

On Friday, October 30, the Huskies diving team will travel to Eau Claire, Wis. to take on the Pointers. The start of time of the meet is set for 6 p.m.

Then on Saturday, October 31, the St. Cloud State swimming team will host the Pointers in a 1 p.m. meet in Halenbeck Aquatic Center.

Friday at MSU Moorhead

To open competition in the new 2009-10 season, the Husky women’s swimming and diving squad dominated Minnesota State University Moorhead, winning 11 of the 13 events.

SCSU also set three new pool records enroute to the 11 wins.

SCSU’s 400 medley relay led off the meet with a first place finish in a time of 4:01.20. Senior All-American Cathy Haen (Eveleth) swam the first leg, senior Katie Brueggemann (Grafton, Wis.) swam second, sophomore All-American Kirsten Koetter (Melrose) was third and rookie Ali Domeier (St. Cloud) brought up the rear for the victory.

The 1650 free was the second event of the evening, and St. Cloud State’s first year swimmer Dayna Nellis tabbed her first collegiate career victory, touching the wall in 18:16.78 to set a new pool record. In the 200 free, senior Alisha Blaydes charted first place honors with a time of 2:00.04.

Koetter garnered her first solo victory of the season in the 50 free, finishing the race in :24.85, just 14 tenths of a second shy of a national qualifying B-cut mark. The seventh event of the evening was the 200 butterfly, and it was Nellis posting her second first place finish of the day with a time of 2:13.14. Blaydes followed Nellis’s win with a win of her own in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall in :54.66.

Haen, also won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:13.26. Rookie swimmer Heather Crandall (Woodbury) garnered her first collegiate victory as a Husky with a time of 5:16.43 in the 500 freestyle, which also set a new pool record.

On the boards, sophomore Allison Tracy (Minot, N.D.) tallied her first win of the season, totaling 221.15 points on the three-meter. Brueggemann set a new pool record, winning the 200 breast in a time of 2:27.39, while SCSU’s 400 free relay, made up of Blaydes, senior Kelly Vieau (Delano), Koetter and junior April Greene (Sun Prairie, Wis.) touched the wall in 3:42.87.

Saturday at MSU Moorhead

For the second consecutive day, the Huskies took care of business winning 11 of 16 events against Minnesota State University Moorhead.

The Huskies took the first four events as Haen and Blades won the 200 medley in 1:51.35. Nellis then won the 1000 free with a time of 11:02.10.

Blades won her second event of the day with a time of 2:00.04 in the 200 free, before Haen took the 50 back in 28.28.

In the sixth event of the day, Koetter swam a 1:00.25 100 fly to take first and Vieau took home the 50 free with a time of 25.28.

Blades then won her third event of the meet with a time of 55.42 in the 100 free before Haen won her second event with a 1:00.59 time in the 100 back.

After setting a pool record on Friday, Crandall won the 500 free for the second consecutive day with a time of 5:22.59. Koetter won her second event of the day, swimming to the top spot in the 50 butterfly in 26.22 after winning the event Friday.

Freshman Melissa Krohn (Racine, Wis.) took second in the three-meter with a score of 232.90.

To close out the meet, April Greene (Sun Prairie, Wis.), Domeier, Vieau and Koetter posted a time of 1:40.62 to win the 200 freestyle relay.
