Male & Female Diving Coach of the Year after leading rookie diver Luke Weber and junior Cassi Mrozek to conference championships and Male Diver of the Year and Female Diver of the Year honors.
Torgerson was named the 2009 National Male Diving Coach of the Year after helping coach SCSU's senior diver Nate Jimerson to his third national title in just her first year on the SCSU coaching staff.
Torgerson also tabbed the 2009 Northern Sun Diving Coach of the Year accolades after guiding both Nate Jimerson and senior women's diver Kelsey Berkeland to Male and Female Diver of the Year honors and a clean sweep of the Northern Sun diving titles on both boards, respectively.
Torgerson comes to SCSU from the Sauk Rapids-Rice school district where she has been the head diving coach for the past six years and has taught special education for the past two years. At Sauk Rapids-Rice she was Section 3A boy’s diving coach of the year four times in 2003, ‘04, ‘06, and ‘07 and had a five year run as Section 3A girls diving coach of the year from 2003-07.
Torgerson is also a Level II gymnastics coach for the Special Olympics of Minnesota, a post she has held since February of 2007. She has been a personal trainer, and was an assistant diving coach and swimming and diving instructor at the University of Minnesota.
Torgerson is a 2002 product of the University of Minnesota where she graduated with degrees in both Kinesiology and Spanish as well as a minor in coaching. She then went on to St. Cloud State University where she received her Graduate Licensure in Special Education in 2006.
At Minnesota, Torgerson was a four year member of the swimming and diving team from 1997 to 2001 and was a member of the Golden Gophers 1999 and 2000 Big Ten Championship squads. In 2000 she was the Big Ten silver medalist in three-meter diving and became an All-American in one-meter diving. The 2001 team captain still holds the University of Minnesota record for one-meter diving. In 1999 and 2000 Torgerson was also a member of the Minnesota track and field team.
A St. Cloud native and Tech High School Graduate, Torgerson and her husband Jeremy reside in Sauk Rapids with their daughter Lilly and son Jack.
Anthony Buhr
Graduate Assistant Coach
Anthony Buhr begins his second year as a graduate assistant coach for the Huskies in
2011-12. Buhr served as a student assistant coach for the Huskies in 2009-10 after completing a standout collegiate career in swimming. A 2008 transfer from the University of North Dakota, where he was a two-time All-American in the 200 free relay (second) and the 200 medley relay (fourth), Buhr made his own impact on the Husky program his senior season in 2008-09. At the 2009 NCAA Division II Championships, Buhr competed in the 50 free, 100 breast, 200 free relay and 400 free relay for the Huskies. He brought home with him six All-American Honorable Mention honors. Of note, in 2007, Buhr was a member of the UND free relay team that won the National Championship, setting a new national record in the process.
A 2005 graduate of Richfield High School, Buhr is the son of Peter Durant and Mary Buhr. He says winning the National Championship in the 200 free relay was his biggest sports thrill. An All-Conference swimmer as well, Buhr graduated with a degree in physical education and a minor in athletic coaching at St. Cloud State in 2010. He is currently working towards a master's degree in sports management.
Sarah Burnell
Graduate Assistant Coach
A familiar face to the Husky Swimming and Diving program, Sarah Burnell (Oshkosh, Wis.) returns to St. Cloud State University as a graduate assistant coach in 2011-12. A four-time letterwinner for the Huskies, Burnell swam for current head coach Jeff Hegle and the Huskies from 2005-09. During her collegiate career, Burnell was named the squad’s Rookie of the Year for the 2005-06 stint after swimming a leg on the women’s 800 free relay squad that set a new school record (which still stands) at the 2006 North Central Conference Championships with a time of 7:44.36. During her sophomore campaign Burnell garnered the team’s Most Valuable Swimmer and Hardest Worker of the Year accolades for setting a new school record in the 1000 free (which has since been broken by current Husky Dayna Nellis). An All-NCC swimmer and NCC Academic Honor Roll student-athlete, Burnell had a strong senior season in 2008-09. The team captain posted 11 individual first place victories, including the squad’s top time of 4:42.22 in the 400 IM and setting a new pool record at Minnesota State’s Nemzek Pool in the 1000 free (11:02.33).
Following her collegiate athletic career, Burnell graduated from St. Cloud State in May of 2010 with a bachelor’s of science in biology. Since 2009, she has served as the varsity assistant swim coach at nearby Sartell High School, as well as the head coach for middle school boys. Her duties included writing work out plans and overseeing swim meets while managing a team of 60 participants. Burnell is currently a swimming instructor at Gold’s Gym in Sartell. She instructs individuals of all ages (3-65 years of age) on proper strokes, as well as organizes and schedules all lesson plans.
The daughter of Sid and Bob Burnell and 2005 graduate of Oshkosh West High School, Sarah plans to pursue a master’s degree in exercise science at St. Cloud State.
