The Matt Verwey Story
2008-09: Red-shirt season.
2007-08: Sophomore…a four-time All-American Honorable Mention swimmer…at the 2008 Division II Championships he finished 14th in the 200 backstroke …was a member of the 400 free relay team, which placed 13th at nationals…was a member of the 200 medley relay, which placed 14th at nationals, and also participated on the 800 free relay, which posted a 15th place mark at the NCAA Championships…teamed up with Kyle Cordry, Jake Goergen and Sean Fitzgerald to surpass SCSU’s 800 free relay record…the relay touched the wall at 6:55.42, bettering the previous mark of 6:56.97…the same four teamed up again in the final event of the entire meet, on Mar. 15, to break the four-year-old record in the 400 free relay…they surpassed the standard of 3:05.79, when they finished in 3:05.38…Verwey’s 400 freestyle relay team of Cordry, Goegen and Kyle Green earned the North Central Conference title of 2008 after finishing the race in 3:05.81…individually he finished second at the NCC Championships in the 200 backstroke with his career-best time of 1:50.33..in all, was a three-time All-NCC swimmer and an Honorable Mention All-NCC swimmer…named NCC Swimmer of the Week on Feb. 12, 2008…garnered National Swimmer of the Week honors on Feb. 13, 2008…won nine individual events throughout the season.
2006-07: First year...started season strong in opening dual with two individual wins and one relay win, coming in the 200 medley…also won 200 IM and 100 back with times of 2:00.90 and 55:00 respectivley…finished second in the NCC in the 200 yard IM, and third in 200 yard back, also on second place 800 yard free relay team and second place 400 yard free relay team...competed in nationals in 200 back, 400 IM and 200 IM...Verwey was named NCC swimmer of the week on 12/05/2006...also set new SCSU records in 2006-07 with a 1:53.70 mark in the 200 backstroke, and a 4:06.80 mark in the 400 Individual Medley.
HIGH SCHOOL : 2006 graduate of Hunting Hill High School in Red Deer, Alberta…comes to the Huskies as one of the top backstrokers out of Alberta.
PERSONAL: Parents are Edward and Sheila Verwey of Red Deer, Alberta…favorite sports personality is Lleyton Hewitt…high school coach was Mike Effray.
