SOFTBALL: Annual Alumni Game A Success

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball program hosted its annual Alumni Game on Sunday, Oct. 4, at Historic Selke Field. Head Coach Paula U’Ren administered one game consisting of seven innings, with the current Husky softball squad suiting up against 27 softball alumni who returned for the day. Among the 27 alumni that returned were All-Americans Jenny Gensch (2005-08), Abby Bourman (2000-03), Abby Velta (2002-05) and Brooke Gentzler (2001-04).

With four All-Americans (Gensch, Bourman, Velta and Gentzler) taking the field, along with All-Region and All-Conference players in Jessica Preiner (2004-06) Abby Augdahl (2004-06), Alison Huselid (1996-99) and Lisa Rosauer (1997-00), the Husky the alumni outlasted the pesky young St. Cloud State squad for a 4-3 victory on Sunday, Oct. 4, at Historic Selke Field.
The current Husky team got on the board with one run in the third inning and added another run in the fourth inning. Behind the strong pitching of sophomore Brit Krieg (Hudson, Wis.) and stellar defensive play in the field, the current Huskies held the alumni off the bases the first three innings.
At the end of the fourth inning, both squads took a breather from action for the Huskies Third Annual Home Run Derby contest. In a three-pitch swing off during the second round, involving Brooke Genztler, Abby Bourman and Jessica Swartout (2004-05), Gentzler came through as the winner and home run champion.
Back to action in the top of the fifth inning, the alumni came out feisty and swinging. Trailing by one run with one out, former Husky Alison Huselid swung for a two-RBI single to give the alumni the 4-2 lead. St. Cloud State answered with one run in the bottom of the seventh inning off a sacrifice fly by junior Sara Sbragia (North St. Paul), but the Husky alumni proved to be too much for the current Huskies as former pitcher Tiffany Rose (2000-03) came in for the alumni in the bottom of the seventh to close out the win for the alumni.
“Today (Oct. 4) was a great match up between some Husky greats and the current Husky players,” said 13-year head coach Paula U’Ren. “Both teams had a fun day on the field and it was a chance for our team to play against great competition this fall.”
After the game, the St. Cloud State softball program hosted a complimentary social for all alumni and their family and fans that partook in the festivities.
“Having the social and Alumni Game on Sunday (Oct. 4) capped off a great weekend of Husky softball from the past and present,” added U’Ren. “This is a team favorite event for all involved and this truly is something special to have all of these outstanding Husky players on the field at the same time!”
