Sauk Rapids, Minn. – The 2009-10 St. Cloud State softball squad went 5-0 at their annual Bob Cross Fall Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Sep. 19-20.
St. Cloud State kicked off the weekend on Friday night with their Spaghetti Feed fundraiser at Howie’s Bar & Grill in downtown St. Cloud.
"It was an exciting weekend of Husky Softball," said 13-year head coach Paula U’Ren. "We started the weekend with our parent/fan Spaghetti Feed on Friday (Sep. 19). A large amount of people turned out to support our program and the players had the chance to talk Husky Softball as we geared up for our home fall tournament."
At the tourney, the Huskies hosted six Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schools in MSU Moorhead, University of Mary, Concordia-St. Paul, Bemidji State, Northern State and Minnesota Duluth.
"Saturday and Sunday were filled with great games as we hosted six conference teams in fall season competition," said U’Ren. "The tournament was a chance for us to see where we are at with our new talent and returning players," added U’ren.
On Saturday, Sep. 19, the Huskies rattled off wins against the University of Mary (6-1), Bemidji State (6-1) and Northern State (4-3). The following day, St. Cloud State charted an exciting 1-0 win over Minnesota Duluth, as sophomore pitcher Brit Krieg (Hudson, Wis.) threw a no-hitter against the Bulldogs.
The Huskies completed the fall tournament with a convincing 5-2 win over MSU Moorhead.
"It was a great start to our fall season as the Huskies played tough defense all weekend and committed just one error in the field," said U’Ren. "Brit (Krieg) threw a great game against Minnesota Duluth and deserved the no-hitter," said U’Ren.
"A big thank you to our fans," added U’Ren. "It was great to see all the softball fans out at the park on a great weekend of weather and games!"
The Huskies continue fall action on Saturday, Sep. 26, as the Huskies head to Fargo, N.D., for a doubleheader against former North Central Conference rival and Division I opponent North Dakota State University. The first pitch of the twin bill is slated for 12:00 p.m.
"Playing against NDSU should be a good test for our team and for our coaches to see the team’s progress throughout the fall ball season," said U’ren.
The NDSU Bison competed in the Division I Super Regional last season against Arizona State.
