St. Cloud, Minn. -- Upper Iowa University softball improved to 21-17 overall and 12-8 in the NSIC after sweeping the St. Cloud State Huskies (20-33, 7-13 NSIC) at historic Selke Field on Wednesday, Apr. 22.

The Peacocks came from behind in the first game, and defeated the Huskies 2-1 in nine innings. In the second game of the twin bill, UIU erupted for eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to run away with the 8-3 victory.

GAME ONE: UIU 2, SCSU 1 (9 innings) - Box Score

The Huskies cracked the scoreboard first in game one of the NSIC doubleheader, charting one run in the bottom of the third inning off sophomore Sara Sbragia’s (North St. Paul) second home run of the season over the right center wall.

St.  Cloud State’s junior pitcher Kaity Strever (Laurel, Mont.) kept the Upper Iowa Peacocks scoreless until the top of the seventh inning. After surrendering UIU’s first two batters in the top of the seventh, Peacock batter Trisha Hagensick reached on a Husky fielding error. UIU then rallied for two consecutive singles to score Hagensick from second and knot the game at 1-1.

In the eighth inning, both teams were held scoreless. SCSU’s Strever faced one batter in the top of the ninth, giving up a lead-off double down the left field line. After that, Strever was relieved by first year pitcher Brit Krieg (Hudson, Wis.). Krieg gave up one more hit in the inning, which scored the eventual game-winning run for the Peacocks.

With their backs against the wall and trailing 1-2 in the bottom of the ninth, the Huskies managed to advance Sarah Stalker (Hudson,  Wis.) to third base after Stalker led off the inning with a single. With two outs on the scoreboard and Melanie Upchurch (Waterloo, Iowa) at the plate, UIU’s pitcher Christy Loan was able to force Upchurch to ground out and seal the Peacock victory.

SCSU’s Strever suffered the loss from the circle, going 8.0 complete innings and giving up just one earned run as she falls to 11-14 overall in 2009. The Huskies scored one run on four hits and committed one error in the contest.

GAME TWO: UIU 8, SCSU 3 - Box Score

Game two of the doubleheader seemed to start in déjà vu fashion, as the Huskies took the early lead 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning. It wasn’t until the top of the sixth when the Peacocks got hot and broke the game open, scoring eight runs on seven hits to take the 8-1 lead over the Huskies heading into the bottom of the sixth frame.

St. Cloud State managed to score one run in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, but the UIU pitching and defense was too much for the Huskies, as the Peacocks got out of historic Selke Field with the 8-3 victory and the NSIC sweep on the road.

First year Brit Krieg earned the start for the Huskies and went 6.0 innings before being relieved by Kristin Jakobsen (Elmwood Park, Ill.). Krieg (9-15) tallied two strikeouts and gave up four earned runs in the loss while Jakobsen went 1.0 innings with one strikeout and gave up just two hits in her eighth career appearance.

At the plate, Rachel Haines (Pepin, Wis.) led the Huskies offensively, going 2-for-3 with one run scored. Garnering RBI’s in the contest were Emily Edgerton (Wausau, Wis.), Sara Sbragia and Nicole Brandenburg (Grafton, Wis.).

This upcoming weekend, the Huskies (20-33, 7-13 NSIC) will head on the road for league twin bills against Augustana College (Apr. 25) and Wayne State (Apr. 26). Both doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday are slated for 12 p.m. start times.
