Aberdeen, S.D. – In Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action, the St. Cloud State University softball team (20-31, 7-11 NSIC) earned its second league split of the weekend against Northern State University (4-29, 1-17 NSIC) on Sunday, Apr. 19, at the NSU Alex Nemzek Softball Field.

St. Cloud State was victorious in the first game, 6-2, and fell short in the second contest, 1-2, giving Northern State its first NSIC win of the season.

GAME ONE: SCSU 6, NSU 2 – Box Score

The Huskies erupted for six runs on 17 team hits in the first game of today’s twin bill to notch the 6-2 victory over Northern State University. St. Cloud State scored three runs in the top of the second and one run in the top of the third, fifth and seventh innings to gain the victory.

Laurel, Mont., native Kaity Strever earned the victory from the circle, improving to 11-13 overall after giving up just two earned runs and five Wolves hits in 7.0 innings pitched.

SCSU’s first year Courtney Adamski (Becker) posted her first career run scored in the contest, while senior second baseman Rachel Haines (Pepin, Wis.) went three-for-four at the plate with a season best three runs batted in.

Sarah Nohrenberg (Cottage Grove) also was hot at the plate, going three-for-four at the plate with one run scored. Her three hits today against NSU set a new personal career game best for the first year center fielder.

GAME TWO: NSU 2, SCSU 1 – Box Score

The second game stayed scoreless until the top of the seventh when the Huskies cracked the scoreboard, tallying one run on two hits.

Melanie Upchurch (Waterloo, Iowa) led off the inning, doubling down the left field line. Next up, Sara Sbragia (North St. Paul) sacrifice bunted Upchurch over to third. With two outs on the scoreboard, SCSU’s Nohrenberg doubled down the left field line to score Upchurch and give the Huskies the initial lead.

The NSU Wolves were able to respond in the bottom of the seventh, and loaded the bases with two outs. In what became a pitching versus batting dual, St. Cloud State’s first year pitcher Brit Krieg (Hudson, Wis.) threw 15 pitches to NSU’s Ashley Gabler before Gabler doubled to left center, scoring two runs to win the first NSIC game of the season for the Wolves.

Krieg went 6.2 innings in the loss, falling to 9-14 overall after giving up just five hits and striking out four Wolves batters.

Upchurch led the Huskies at the plate, going two-for-three with one run scored.

St. Cloud State (20-31, 7-11 NSIC) will return home for an NSIC doubleheader against Upper Iowa University on Wednesday, Apr. 22. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at historic Selke Field.
