St. Cloud, Minn. – With the score tied at 3-3 heading into the seventh inning of the second game of the doubleheader, No. 9-ranked Winona State University (33-8, 13-3 NSIC) came up big, scoring two runs to gain the 5-3 victory over St. Cloud State University softball (18-29, 5-9 NSIC) and complete the afternoon sweep at Selke Field on Wednesday, Apr. 15.
GAME ONE: Winona State 6, St. Cloud State 0 – Box Score
Winona State’s starting pitcher, Stacey Struzynski, pitched a gem of a ballgame in the first game of the twin bill against St. Cloud State, surrendering just one hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and allowing just three Husky runners on base. The Warriors scored six runs on nine hits to shutout the Huskies 6-0 and extend SCSU’s losing streak to seven games.
With the win, WSU’s Struzynski improved to 14-3 overall in 2009 from the circle. Junior pitcher Kaity Strever (Laurel, Mont.) fell to 9-12 overall for the Huskies from the circle after pitching all seven innings and striking out one Warrior batter.
The Huskies were led by sophomore Emily Edgerton (Wausau, Wis.), who tallied the lone hit of the contest for St. Cloud State.
GAME TWO: Winona State 5, St. Cloud State 3 – Box Score
The Huskies rebounded with a valiant effort in the second game of this afternoon’s NSIC doubleheader. St. Cloud State matched Winona State run for run in the first two innings, as the score stayed tied at 3-3 until the top of the final frame.
Winona State’s Terra Halron led the top of the seventh inning off with a single to left field. Halron eventually reached second on a sacrifice bunt. Next up, Amanda Wilhelm singled to center, but after a throwing error from SCSU’s centerfielder, Sarah Nohrenberg (Cottage Grove), WSU's Halron was able to score the game-winning run. Before the inning would end, WSU would rally for one more hit and cushion its lead with one more run following a second Husky error in the field to take a 5-3 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The first three batters for SCSU were retired in the bottom of the seventh, giving WSU the 5-3 victory.
In the heartbreaker, the Huskies were led by sophomore shortstop Sarah Stalker (Hudson, Wis.), who came up with two important hits and two RBI’s in the contest. Kelly Laas (Frankfurt, Ill.) and Melanie Upchurch (Waterloo, Iowa) were the other Huskies to garner hits in the loss. Of note, Upchurch tripled for the seventh time this season, which leads the team and the league this season.
SCSU’s Brit Krieg (Hudson, Wis.) suffered the loss from the circle, going 7.0 innings and striking out a pair of Winona State batters while falling to 9-13 overall.
St. Cloud State (18-29, 5-9 NSIC) looks to snap an eight-game slide on Saturday, Apr. 18, as they head to Bismark, N.D., for an NSIC doubleheader against the University of Mary Marauders. The first pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
