SOFTBALL: Concordia Comes From Behind In Both Games To Sweep Huskies

St. Cloud, Minn. – In Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action, the Concordia University Golden Bears (25-15, 7-3 NSIC) came from behind in both games to sweep St. Cloud State University (18-27, 5-7 NSIC) on Saturday, April 11, at historic Selke Field.
GAME ONE – CU 3, SCSU 1 - Box Score
After three and a half scoreless innings, the Husky softball squad jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lizzy Dwyer (Kalispell, Mont.) was the second batter up for the Huskies in the frame and singled up the middle. Next up, Emily Edgerton (Wausau, Wis.) singled through the ride side to advance Dwyer to second. Sophomore Melanie Upchurch (Waterloo, Iowa) reached first on a fielder’s choice with Edgerton advancing to second and Dwyer out at third on the force out. With runners at first and second, centerfielder Sarah Nohrenberg (Cottage Grove) came to the plate and singled through the right side in déjà vu fashion to score Edgerton from second and give the Huskies the initial lead.
St. Cloud State held its one run advantage until the top of the sixth, when the Golden Bears erupted for six hits to score three runs and run away with the 3-1 victory.
Eight different batters for the Huskies garnered a hit in the loss, while Nohrenberg notched the lone RBI of the contest.
Strever suffered the loss in the first game, going 7.0 innings and striking out four Golden Bear batters as her record falls to 9-11 overall.
GAME TWO – CU 3, SCSU 2 - Box Score
First year pitcher Brit Krieg (Hudson, Wis.) started from the circle for the Huskies, going 4.0 innings and holding the Golden Bears scoreless before being relieved by another Husky first year pitcher, Angie Gatz (Winsted), in the top of the fifth inning.
The Huskies cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning, scoring one run on one hit. Senior Rachel Haines (Pepin, Wis.) led the inning off with a single through the right side and eventually advanced to second on a pass ball. Kelly Laas (Frankfort, Ill.) then advanced Haines over to third on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs in the innings, CU’s pitcher through a wild pitch, which scored Haines, giving the Huskies the 1-0 lead.
SCSU added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth frame, scoring one run on two hits to take a 2-0 lead heading into the final two innings.
Concordia came from behind for the second straight game against the Huskies today, scoring three runs on four hits to take the 3-2 advantage.
The Huskies were unable to score in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, dropping the last four straight games to the CU Golden Bears.
SCSU’s Gatz was assessed the loss, as she falls to 0-2 on the season after pitching 3.0 innings.
St. Cloud State will continue NSIC action on Wednesday, April 15, as the Huskies play host to No. 13-ranked Winona State University at historic Selke Field. The first pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
