St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team posted a pair of crucial NSIC victories today with two wins over Minnesota, Crookston. The Huskies won 11-0, and 10-2, in a pair of late Sunday night (Apr. 5) games in the Husky Dome.
The games were originally scheduled to be UMC home games, but were relocated from Crookston, Minn. due to poor playing conditions at the Golden Eagles’ home field.
In the opener the Huskies got a three-run first inning and never looked back en route to the 11-0 win. Starting pitcher Kaity Strever (Laurel, Mont.) went the distance in the circle, allowing just two hits, and none after the third inning.
Strever struck out two and walked none to improve her season record to 9-9. Leading at the plate in game one for the Huskies was Kelly Laas (Frankfort, Ill.), who tabbed a game high three hits in five at-bats. Laas knocked in a pair of runs also while scoring one.
Emily Edgerton (Wausau, Wis.), Lizzy Dwyer (Kalispel, Mont.), and Melanie Upchurch (Waterloo, Iowa) each had two hits in the game with Edgerton collecting a game high three RBI, all coming off over her bases clearing three-run homerun in the top of the Huskies eight-run seventh inning. It should also be noted that just prior to Edgerton’s bomb, that Husky Softball game day public address announcer, Jeff Scheving, correctly predicted that she would hit the homerun.
Edgerton also scored twice, as did Sarah Stalker (Hudson, Wis.).
After scoring the three runs early, the Huskies’ bats cooled down, until reigniting for their late rally in final inning. After going up 11-0 in the top of the seventh, Strever posted her fourth straight hitless inning for the win.
In game two, Brit Krieg (Hudson, Wis.) entered the circle looking to match Strever’s win total of nine. After throwing six strong innings of two-hit ball, Krieg got the seventh inning off and watched as Angie Gatz (Winstead, Minn.) came in to preserve the win. Krieg struck out three and allowed two runs, both earned, on the day. Gatz gave up one hit in the seventh.
Dwyer and Jackie Dooley (St. Paul, Minn.) each led the way with three hits in the game. Dooley also added a RBI and two runs scored, while Dwyer scored one run and added a RBI as well.
Stalker and Sara Sbragia (North St. Paul, Minn.) each had two hits in the game, with each also crossing the plate one time. Sbragia banged in two runs while Stalker added one RBI.
The Huskies scored runs in every inning except the first, and collected 13 total hits in the game. SCSU improves to 18-21 on the season and has won their last five games. They also move above the .500 mark in conference play with their record now at 5-3. UMC meanwhile drops to 0-16 on the season and 0-6 in the NSIC.
