SCSU splits with BSU

Kaity Strever led the Huskies to a win over the Beavers in game two, and a split in the weekend series.

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team finally got to play outside today (Mar. 29) and on a beautiful sunny day in central Minnesota, SCSU picked up their first ever NSIC win, splitting with Bemidji State by scores of 2-6, and 5-0.

Game 2

After dropping the first game the Huskies Kaity Strever (Laurel, Mont.), threw a three-hit complete game gem to get the Huskies back in the win column.  She held the guest Beavers off the board for her fourth shutout of the season, and seventh win.

Strever faced just four over the minimum while allowing only three hits and fanning a season high seven batters.

After playing scoreless ball through nearly five full innings, the Huskies strung together a two-out, five-run rally in the bottom of the fifth.  With two runners in scoring position, Emily Edgerton (Wausau, Wis.) started the scoring with a two RBI single to right field, scoring Steph Cramer (Cohasset, Minn.) and Sarah Stalker (Hudson, Wis.).

Two batters later, Jackie Dooley (St. Paul, Minn.) doubled to left center, brining home Edgerton to make it 3-0 Huskies.  With a new Beaver pitcher in the circle, Sara Sbragia (North St. Paul, Minn.) scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 4-0, before Kelly Lass (Frankfort, Ill.) singled up the middle, brining home Dooley from third to cap the scoring before the inning ended with a 5-0 Husky advantage.

That was plenty for Strever as she retired the next five batters in order before allowing a meaningless double with two outs in the top of the seventh.  In fitting fashion, after allowing the double, Strever regrouped the end the game by retiring the next hitter as the final Beaver batter was caught staring at strike three.

Edgerton went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the way while Sbragia also went 2-for-3.

Game 1

Bemidji State first got on the board in the second inning, taking the early 1-0 lead.  After a scoreless third the Beavers came back to add two more runs in the top of the fourth.

The Huskies cut into the 3-0 Beaver lead in the bottom of the fifth when Melanie Upchurch (Waterloo, Iowa) knocked home Cramer, getting the Huskies within two at 1-3.

BSU effectively put the game away in the next half inning however, when with two outs and two runners on, the Beavers Mara Johnson homered, breaking the game open at 6-1.  The Huskies got out of the inning with no further damage before coming to the plate in the bottom of the sixth.

Stalker led off for the Huskies, and did so in dramatic fashion, hitting a shot over the left field wall for her third homerun of the season, and bringing the Huskies within four at 2-6.

That would be all though for the Huskies in the sixth, as the next three batters went down in order.  The two teams went scoreless through the seventh as the Huskies fell by the 2-6 final.

Brit Kreig, (Hudson, Wis.) suffered the loss in the circle in game one, falling to 7-10 on the season.  Kreig allowed 12 hits, and all six runs were earned.  At the plate, Upchurch paced the Huskies with a 3-for-3 day, while adding an RBI.

With the split, the Huskies record now stands at 14-21 in 2009 and 1-3 after the first weekend of NSIC play.  The Beavers are 7-9, and 2-2 in conference play.

Weather permitting, the Huskies will be back outside at Selke Field on Apr. 1 for another NSIC double-header, as they will take on Minnesota State 2:00 and 4:00 pm.
