SCSU sweeps NSU

Brit Krieg threw a complete game, no-hit shutout against Northern State, leading SCSU to their third straight win.

St. Cloud, Minn. – After a 5-0 win to open their double-dip with Northern State today (Feb. 27), the St. Cloud State softball team got an exclamation point on the sweep with a no-hitter from first year pitcher Brit Krieg (Husdon, Wis.) in 4-0 game-two win.

Krieg faced just two over the minimum, struck out three, walked none, and was perfect for the first three innings of the game.

The Huskies gave Krieg and early cushion as they plated two runners in the first inning.  With runners on first and third, Lizzy Dwyer (Kalispel, Mont.) hit a bases clearing triple to give the home team the early advantage.

Krieg earned her first strikeout of the day to cap off a perfect second, and the Huskies were back the plate looking for more.  This time it was Rachel Haines (Pepin, Wis.) knocking home the run, with her RBI single to center field.

After a scoreless third and fourth, the Huskies added their final bit of insurance with a run in the fifth.  Krieg took care of business in the sixth and seventh to finish off the no-hitter, with only a pair of fielding errors to blemish a hard day’s work.

With the win she improved to 2-4 on the season.  Haines, Dwyer and Sarah Stalker (Hudson, Wis.) all finished the day with two hits while Dwyer led the way with two RBI.

The Huskies got things started in game one with their first shutout of the season, courtesy of Kaity Strever (Laurel, Mont.).  Strever retired the first two batters she faced on six straight strikes and never looked back, allowing just three hits in her seven innings of work, while striking out six and walking only two.

The Huskies wasted little time in jumping on the Wolves, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.  With two runners on Stalker doubled, brining both home, to give the Huskies the early lead.

In the fifth inning, Kelly Laas (Frankfort, Ill.) singled to knock in the Huskies third run, then the third RBI of the day from Stalker made it 4-0 SCSU.  The Huskies were able to tack on one more in the sixth, before Strever pitched a hitless seventh for the 5-0 win.

Stalker finished the game 2-for-3 three with three RBI, while Lass was also 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored two runs.

The Huskies are now 4-12 on the season, and will look to continue on their current three-game winning streak tomorrow (Feb. 28) when they Host the annual Husky Dome Invite.  A full day of games gets kicked off with South Dakota and Bemidji State at 8:00 am.  Northern State falls to 0-2 in their first action of the season, but will be back on the Husky Dome turf tomorrow as well.

The Huskies tangle with Minnesota State in their lone game of the day at 4:00 pm.  The Mavericks are currently 3-3 on the season.  For a full listing of the days games please click here
