UCCS responded with a 7-2 win in the second game of the twin bill to earn the non-conference split.

GAME ONE - SCSU 11, UCCS 3

The Huskies cracked the scoreboard first with one run in the second inning, and added to their lead scoring four runs in the third, one in the fifth and sixth stints and four more runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Dwyer led the way for St. Cloud State, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two runs batted in, while first year Sarah Nohrenberg (Cottage Grove) went 2-for-2 in the batter’s box.

The highlight of the afternoon was Stalker’s three-run blast over the left field fence in the top of the seventh inning, which scored Melanie Upchurch (Waterloo, Iowa) and Dwyer to give the Huskies the 11-3 advantage on the scoreboard. Stalker went 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored, three RBI's and one walk.

St. Cloud State will wrap up its non-conference doubleheader against UCCS this afternoon, Feb. 19, and then will participate in the NSIC/RMAC Softball Crossover on Feb. 20-22 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

GAME TWO - UCCS 7, SCSU 2

In the second game of the twin bill, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs bounced back to earn the split with a 7-2 victory over St. Cloud State on Feb. 19.

First year Brit Krieg (Hudson, Wis.) earned the start from the circle for the Huskies, going 2.1 innings and giving up six UCCS runs in the loss. Kristin Jakobsen, another first year pitcher from Elmwood Park, Ill., came in to relieve Krieg in the bottom of the third, and completed the game, going 3.2 innings and giving up just one UCCS run.

Although UCCS took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Huskies answered with a run of their own in the top of the second to knot the game at 1-1. SCSU’s Stalker led off the inning with a double. Later in the inning, senior co-captain Rachel Haines (Pepin, Wis.) knocked Stalker in for her lone RBI of the contest.

UCCS was quick to respond to the Husky score and erupted for five more runs in the bottom of the second to take a commanding 6-1 lead heading into the third frame. The Huskies managed to score one more run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Mountain Lions proved to be too much as the host team ran away with the 7-2 victory.

St. Cloud State was led by Melanie Upchurch who went 2-for-3 at the plate and tallied one RBI. The Huskies scored two runs on 10 hits and committed three errors in the field.

Led by 12th-year head coach Paula U’Ren, the Husky softball squad (1-7, 0-0 NSIC) will continue action tomorrow, Feb. 20, at the NSIC/RMAC Crossover in Colorado Springs, Colo.  St. Cloud State will take the field against Nebraska-Kearney at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning on UCCS’s Leon Young 5 field.
