St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team closed out the 2009 Husky Dome Classic today (Feb. 15) with a game against their new conference rival in Concordia University. The guest Golden Bears were the only team to rip through the Classic without a blemish, and in each team’s final game of the weekend, it was CU getting the best of SCSU at 7-1.
After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Bears did their damage in the second and third. Concordia hung all seven of their runs on the Huskies in the two-inning span, which included a three-run second and a four-run third.
Six of the seven runs were earned off Husky starter Kaity Strever (Laurell, Mont.), who pitched all seven innings, allowing 11 hits, while striking out four and walking one.
Strever’s counterpart, CU’s Stephanie Schmikla faced just four over the minimum, allowing five SCSU hits while walking none and striking out three. She also held the Huskies off the board until the sixth inning when they managed their only run.
Malanie Upchurch (Waterloo, Iowa) went 2-for-3 to pace the Huskies while Rachel Haines (Pepin, Wis.) Kelly Laas (Frankfort , Ill.) and Sarah Nohrenberg (Cottage Grove, Minn.) tallied the Huskies other hits. Laas had the Huskies only RBI when she knocked in Nohrenberg in the sixth.
The Huskies will take their act on the road next week when they head to Colorado Springs, Colo, for the NSIC/RMAC Crossover from Feb. 20-22. SCSU will play six games in the three-day span, meeting six different schools from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
