SOFTBALL: Rachel Haines Sets Multiple School Records Against the Mavericks

St. Cloud, Minn. -- St. Cloud State softball senior Rachel Haines (Pepin, Wis.) finished her career on top today, becoming SCSU's all-time career hits leader as the Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks swept the Huskies in the last doubleheader of the regular season on Tuesday, Apr. 28, at historic Selke Field. MSU was victorious in both games, 6-2 and 8-4.
GAME ONE: MSU 6, SCSU 2 - Box Score
Minnesota State cracked the scoreboard in the first inning with one run and added three more runs in the top of the third and two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth frame.
The Huskies jumped on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the fourth after three hits. Sarah Stalker (Hudson, Wis.) led off the inning with a single to left field. With two outs, sophomore Melanie Upchurch (Waterloo, Iowa) singled to shortstop, advancing Stalker to second. Next up was Sara Sbragia (North St. Paul), who singled to center field to score Stalker.
St. Cloud State added its second run of the first game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Emily Edgerton (Wausau, Wis.), SCSU’s sophomore catcher, led off the inning with a single to shortstop. Upchurch followed that up with a single to center, advancing Edgerton to third base after a fielding error by the Mavericks in the outfield. First year Jackie Dooley (St. Paul) was able to score Edgerton from third with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field to cut the Maverick lead to 6-2.
The Mavericks went on to win the first game, 6-2, after totaling 13 hits in the ballgame. The Huskies managed two runs on nine team hits.
Upchurch led the offensive attack for the Huskies, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two putouts in left field.
Suffering the loss from the circle for the Huskies was first year Brit Krieg (Hudson, Wis.), who went 4.0 innings and struck out one Maverick batter before falling to 10-16 on the season.
GAME TWO: MSU 8, SCSU 4 - Box Score
The Huskies scored four runs on five team hits to drop their final game of the 2009 season to Minnesota State by a score of 4-8.
Emily Edgerton led the way with a three-run blast over the left field fence to knot the game at 3-3 after one complete inning played. Minnesota State continued to add to their lead, scoring one run in the top of the second, three runs in the top of the third, and one more run in the top of the fifth inning to garner the NSIC win.
The bright spot of the contest was SCSU’s senior Rachel Haines, who became the school’s all-time career hits leader with a single through the left side of the infield in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Pepin, Wis., native added to her career hit total, posting a hit during her last career plate appearance in the bottom of the seventh inning.
SCSU’s Kristin Jakobsen (Elmwood Park, Ill.) was awarded the loss from the circle in the second game, going 3.0 innings and giving up five earned Maverick runs.
Coached by Paula U’Ren, the Husky softball squad completed the 2009 season today against the Mavericks, going 21-38 overall with an 8-18 league mark in its first year of competition in the NSIC.
SCSU’s lone senior on the 2009 roster, Rachel Haines, completed her last game in the Cardinal and Black this afternoon against the Mavericks. The daughter of Jim and Bea Haines and a native of Pepin, Wis., Rachel is a four-year starter at second base for the Huskies. Last season Rachel was named to the 2008 CoSIDA Academic All-American Second Team, the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V First Team and also to the 2008 Daktronics, Inc. All-North Central Region First Team. She is a three-time NFCA Academic Honoree and a two-time All-North Central Conference Academic winner. Rachel holds 10 school records for Husky softball, including 224 career games started and played, she leads the all-time most at bats list with 765 and her 139 career runs scored rank first. The senior also became the school’s all-time career hits leader today, tallying three against Minnesota State, bringing her career total to 239. Rachel also holds the school record for most stolen bases in a game with four against Univ. of Science-Philadelphia. (3/1/08) and most stolen bases in a career with 73. A team captain and biomedical science major with a 4.0 GPA, Rachel was recently accepted into the University of Minnesota medical school, which only 1% of people in the country achieve. CONGRATULATIONS Rachel on your softball career, thanks for all the great memories, and best of luck to you in the future!
