Wayne, Neb. – Led by sophomore Sarah Stalker, the St. Cloud State softball squad (21-36, 8-16 NSIC) earned a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference split against Wayne State College (Neb.) on Sunday, Apr. 26, at the WSC Pete Chapman Complex.
St. Cloud State suffered the loss in the first game, getting shutout 0-7. The Huskies returned the favor however in the second contest, shutting out the Wildcats, 5-0.
GAME ONE: WSC 7, SCSU 0 – Box Score
Wayne State (Neb.) cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning during the first game today, scoring two runs on two hits and never looked back, scoring five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to a 7-0 NSIC shutout victory over St. Cloud State.
First year pitcher Kristin Jakobsen pitched her first complete career game for the Huskies today, going 6.0 innings and striking out two Wildcat batters in the process. The Elmwood Park, Ill., native fell to 0-4 with the loss today in 2009.
The Huskies managed three hits at the plate, with Rachel Haines (Pepin, Wis.), Melanie Upchurch (Waterloo, Iowa) and Jackie Dooley (St. Paul) each garnering a hit.
GAME TWO: SCSU 5, WSC 0 – Box Score
St. Cloud State redeemed itself in the second game of today’s league twin bill, snapping a six-game slide with a 5-0 shutout victory over Wayne State (Neb.).
Sophomore shortstop Sarah Stalker (Hudson, Wis.) erupted at the plate for the Huskies, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, including her eighth double of the season. Sarah Nohrenberg (Cottage Grove) and Melanie Upchurch each went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI in the contest.
The Huskies slowly added to their lead over the Wildcats, scoring one run in the top of the second, one more in the top of the third, two runs in the top of the fifth and one final run in the top of the sixth frame.
In the field, the Huskies committed just one error and scored their five runs on 10 hits at the plate.
Earning the victory for St. Cloud State from the circle was first year Brit Krieg (Hudson, Wis.), improving to 10-15 overall. Krieg gained her third career shutout after giving up just six hits in 7.0 innings pitched.
St. Cloud State (21-36, 8-16 NSIC) will complete regular season action on Tuesday, Apr. 28, with a rescheduled NSIC doubleheader against Minnesota State University, Mankato at historic Selke Field. Before the start of the first game, SCSU will honor its lone senior, Rachel Haines, for Senior Day. The first pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
