SOCCER: Huskies Make History with 1-0 Double Overtime Win

St. Paul, Minn. – With 42 seconds left in double overtime, senior Jenn Clifford (Blaine) scored her second goal of the season to end the 2009 regular season with a 1-0 win over the Concordia University Friday night at Sea Foam Stadium.
With the win, the Huskies (10-4-4, 9-2-2 NSIC) clinched home field advantage for the first round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate conference tournament and third place overall behind Minnesota Duluth and Winona State.
St. Cloud State has now posted a double digit regular season win total for the second time in school history and its the Huskies’ most wins since the 1995 squad recorded 13. It is also the team’s best conference record since finishing third in the North Central Conference.
The Huskies will host a playoff game in only its second season in the conference and has now recorded back to back winning seasons under second year head coach Becky Heiberger.
St. Cloud State put up 11 shots in the game, with four coming on net, as the Golden Bears took 14 shots in the game.
Senior Elizabeth Kelly made five saves in the game to record her fifth shutout of the season. She now is tied for second with four other former Huskies on the all-time regular season shutout list.
The Huskies set a school record with its eighth shutout of the season and have now won two overtime games in 2009.
Junior Gabrielle Najera (Longmont, Colo.) recorded a team-high three shots, while sophomore Alexandra Pafko (Blaine) had a team-high two shots on goal.
The Huskies will host the first round of NSIC tournament at Husky Stadium on Wednesday, November 4. The time of the game and opponent has yet to be determined.
