SOCCER: Huskies Take Down Beavers in 6-5 Shootout

Jessica Pafko ended the game with the a shootout kick past the Beavers goalkeeper.

St. Cloud, Minn. - (VIDEO INTERVIEW INCLUDED AT END OF STORY) The St. Cloud State soccer team won its first conference playoff game in school history in beating Bemidji State 6-5 in a seven round shootout in the first round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament Wednesday night at Husky Stadium. 

After playing to a 1-1 tie in 110 minutes of play and the shootout tied at 5-5, backup senior goalkeeper KaitlinKelly (West Allis, Wis.) made a stop for the Huskies to set the stage for the game winner.

Jessica Pafko (Blaine), who had recorded an assist earlier in the game, stepped up with the chance to continue the Huskies season and delivered with a shot that hit nothing but the back right corner of the net to end the Beavers 2009 season.

St. Cloud State battled though out the game coming back from a 1-0 deficit late into the second half, when the Huskies scored its only goal of the game.

After a Beaver penalty, Pafko sent a kick from the left side to the front of the box, where the ball bounced in front of senior Chelsey Scheller, who delivered the game-tying goal with just 7:22 to go in the game. It was her second goal of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Kelly (Omaha, Neb.) made her 19th start in net for the Huskies and came up with three saves in the game after 1:06.58 of action. 

St. Cloud State outshot the Beavers 20-8 in the contest, as the Bemidji State goalkeeper made eight saves. 

The Huskies will move on to the second round of play as they take on the No. 2 seeded Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs at noon on Friday in Winona, Minn. 

The Bulldogs are now 14-2-2 and 11-1-1 in the NSIC after a 1-0 win over Northern State University on Friday afternoon. Both teams tied 0-0 earlier in the season with the Bulldogs winning the second matchup 1-0 in Duluth, Minn.

The winner of the game will move on to play the winner of the No. 1 seed Winona State Warriors and No. 4 Minnesota State at 1 p.m. Sunday in Winona, Minn.
