St. Cloud, Minn. -- Led by Alexandra Pafko (Blaine) and Gabrielle Najera (Longmont, Colo.), the St. Cloud State University soccer team (3-2-3, 2-0-1 NSIC) edged the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs in NSIC action, 2-1, at SCSU's Husky Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009.
Alexandra Pafko was all over the field today, charting a game-high nine total shots, three of those which were on goal.
The Huskies cracked the scoreboard at the 16:14 mark of the first frame when SCSU’s Najera connected on her third goal of the season with passes from Chelsey Permenter (Omaha, Neb.) and Elyse De Stefano (Urbandale, Iowa). The Mustangs were quick to respond, and less than 15 minutes later, knotted the game at 1-1 with a goal from Kate Voigt at 31:11. SMSU’s Courtney McCarthy was awarded the assist on the score.
Just before halftime, St. Cloud State was able to put the pressure on SMSU’s defense and with time running down, SCSU’s Jessica Pafko (Blaine) found her sister Alexandra Pafko for the game-winning goal at 44:20.
St. Cloud State’s goaltender Elizabeth Kelly (Omaha, Neb.) played the entire game and improved to 3-2-3 on the season after garnering four saves in the contest. The Mustangs goalie, Kendra Olchefske, totaled seven saves in 90:00 minutes of action.
The Huskies outshot the Mustangs 23-9 in the game, as SMSU continues to look for its first win of the 2009 season, falling to 0-6-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the NSIC.
