St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State soccer team hosted Concordia University this afternoon in Husky Stadium on senior day the regular season finale for both schools.  In the only scoring of the match, Tara Evangelist (Mahtomedi) scored at 41:42 to give the Huskies the 1-0 lead.  A scoreless second half then led to the 1-0 final as the Huskies now to finish 8-7-2 and 6-5-2 in the NSIC.

This season marks the first since 1995 that the Huskies have posted a winning record, and it is the first time in team history that SCSU has finished with a winning record in conference play.

Play was even through the first half, with the Golden Bears outshooting the Huskies 11-9.  Late in the half, the ball was bouncing around between a group of players when Evangelist stepped forward to get a foot on it and launched in nearly 40 yards for the game’s only goal.  The CU goalkeeper was beaten to her right on a ball she just could not catch up with.

In the second half the Huskies took over control of the game, and unloaded for 15 shots with a stellar 10 landing on net.  However, the Golden Bear netminder kept her team in the match, stopping all the second-half shots and finishing with 12 total saves on the day.

The Husky defense made things easier on SCSU goalkeeper Elizabeth Kelly (Omaha, Neb.) who faced just two shots on the way to her career high fourth shutout of the season.  Kelly also records her eighth win of the season, which is the third best tally for a goalkeeper in school history.

Also by keeping the Golden Bears off the board today, Kelly moves her season goals against average to 1.06, which sets a new single season record at SCSU.  She also improves her career record GAA mark to

With her goal Evangelist jumped over the 20-point plateau for the season, the first Husky since 2006 to do so, and just the second since 2001 to accomplish the feat.  She finishes the regular season with 21 points (6G/9A).

At 6-14-0 and 3-10-0, the Golden Bears season comes to a close, but the Huskies can now begin preparation for the second season and the NSIC/U.S. Bank Women’s Soccer Tournament.  The top-eight teams in the NSIC regular season standings qualify for the tournament, and the Huskies currently sit in a seventh place tie with Upper Iowa.

The opening rounds games will be Wednesday, Nov. 5, but the official tournament seedings, pairings, and game times will be announced later today.

After the quarter final games, all played on the campus of the higher seed, the semifinals and finals will be hosted by the highest remaining seed, and will be played on Nov. 8 & 9.
