Huskies Fall

The Huskies were unable to walk away with their fifth stright win today as they fell to Bemidji State 2-1.

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State soccer team entered Husky Stadium today, Oct. 12, against Bemidji State riding a four game winning streak, and were coming off a huge come-from-behind win yesterday over Minnesota Duluth.  Despite controlling the game today, and outshooting the Beavers by a 23-10 margin, BSU made just enough plays to squeak out the 2-1 win.

The teams played to a scoreless first half as SCSU outshot Bemidji State 9-6 in the period.  In the second stanza, the Huskies were even more dominant, peppering the Beaver net for 14 shots, compared to just four for BSU.

St. Cloud State held the ball deep into Beaver territory for the majority of the final frame.  However the first time Bemidji State was able to maneuver it down into the Husky zone, the Beavers Katherine Wheeler got just enough of a loose ball to sneak it out of the mosh pit at 64:46 and past SCSU goalkeeper Elizabeth Kelly (Omaha, Neb.) for the 1-0 lead.

The Huskies continued to take their chances as they placed five shots on goal in the second half.  Despite the quality chances though, Beaver netminder Samantha Ross was stout in goal with eight saves on the day.  Before SCSU finally broke through late in the game, Bemidji State’s Lauren Olivaries put the guests up 2-0 on a penalty shot with under five minutes to play.

Never letting up, the Huskies got on the board late when Kyrsten Flynn-Wallace (Biamarck, N.D.) scored right in front of the net at 89:09 with assists from Chelsey Scheller (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Tara Evangelist (Mahtomedi, Minn.) off an Evangelist corner kick.

Despite their best efforts, the Huskies were unable to mount another scoring threat in the final minute, and the match closed with the 2-1 score.

SCSU drops their first match since Sept. 27 and falls to 7-5-0, and 5-3-0 in the NSIC while Bemidji State improves to 9-5-0 and 3-5-0 in league games.  With her goal, Flynn-Wallace ties herself for the team lead with five on the season.

The Huskies return to action next weekend on homecoming with a 10:00 am tilt against Upper Iowa on Oct. 18 as part of the Homecoming festivities.  They then close the weekend on Oct. 19 when they host league leader Winona State.  Against UIU, it will mark the first time SCSU has hosted a homecoming match since the 2000 season when they beat South Dakota State 5-0.
