Evangelist

Tara Evangelist paced the Huskies today with a career high two goals and four points.

Marshall, Minn. – The St. Cloud State soccer team took on Southwest Minnesota today, Sept. 28, and rode a two goal performance from Tara Evangelist (Mahtomedi, Minn.) to the 2-0 victory over the Mustangs on a cool Sunday afternoon.

The two teams took off to the locker rooms at intermission knotted in a scoreless tie.  After the break, there were 17 more minutes of shut-out soccer before Evangelist  took a pass form Alexandra Pafko (Blaine, Minn.) and found the back of the net from 10 yards out to give the visitors the lead at the 62:46 mark.

The Husky defense would make the lone goal stand up, and Southwest Minnesota was held without a shot on goal in the second half.  Just for good measure however, Evangelist scored an unassisted goal with less than two minutes to play (88:54) to provide the game’s final 2-0 margin.

The goal was the fourth of the young season for Evangelist, which ties her for the team lead while her 10 points puts her alone at the top.  She also fired off seven total shots on the day to lead the Huskies and landed two on net, giving her a team high 10 shots on goal.

Evangelist’s four goals tie her with Kyrsten Flynn-Wallace (Bismarck, N.D.), giving the Huskies a pair of four goal scorers for the first time since the 2005 season.  Evangelist is also scoring at a .556 clip when her shots land on goal.

Elizabeth Kelly (Omaha, Neb.) gains her fourth win in goal and her first shut-out of the season.  The win is the third straight by shut-out for the Huskies.  (The previous two shut-out wins were shared by goalkeepers Elizabeth Kelly and KaitlinKelly).

With the win the Huskies get back to the .500 mark at 4-4-0, having split matches for the fourth straight weekend.  SCSU also improves to 2-2-0 in the NSIC, while SMSU falls to 1-7-0 and 1-3-0

The Huskies will look for their first weekend sweep this coming weekend as they travel north to take on Minnesota Crookston (1-7-1, 0-4-0) and MSU Moorhead (4-3-1, 1-2-1) on Oct. 4 and 5 respectively.  Each game is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
