Husky Soccer beats Wayne State 3-0 for first NSIC win. |
St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State soccer team continued to dominate the shot column, and today it carried over to a 3-0 victory over visiting Wayne State (0-8-1, 0-2-0). The win marks the first for the Huskies in the NSIC, and evens their record at 1-1 in the conference and 3-3 overall.
SCSU outshot the Wildcats 27-6, including a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. Late in the first half, First year Alexandra Pafko (Blaine, Minn.) took a crossing pass from Kyrsten Flynn-Wallace (Bismarck, N.D.) and scored her first career goal to give the Huskies the 1-0 lead at the 29:30 mark.
In the waning minutes of the opening half the pair hooked up again but this time it was Pafko who carried the ball deep into the Wildcat zone and passed off to Flynn-Wallace in front of the net for the score. The goal was Flynn-Wallace’s team leading fourth of the season.
The only scoring in the second half came off a corner kick from Tara Evangelist (Mahtomedi, Minn.) that actually appeared to bounce off a Wildcat defender before setting in the back of the net.
Pafko led the Huskies with four shots while 15 total Huskies tallied and least one shot, and nine different players put a shot on goal.
Goalkeepers Elizabeth Kelly (Omaha, Neb.) and Kaitlin Kelly (West Allis, Wis.) combined for their second shutout of the season and E. Kelly finished with four saves on the day.
The Huskies split for the third straight week, and sit at 3-3 and 1-1 in the new NSIC. Wayne State’s goal scoring woes continues as they have now been shut out for the second time in as many days and have scored just three goals in their last seven games.
The Huskies will take their act on the road next weekend for a 4:00 pm tussle with Minnesota State on Sept. 27 and a 1:00 pm appointment with Southwest Minnesota the following, day Sept. 28. The Mavericks are 3-1-2 in 2008 and ranked 20th in the lasted NSCAA/Adidas poll. SMSU sits at 1-5 on the season.
