Kara Larsen scored the game's first two goals as the Huskies beat Minnesota, Crookston 7-0. |
St. Cloud, Minn. – After struggling to put the ball on the net in a frustrating loss earlier in the week, the St. Cloud State soccer team showed early and often that they had learned their lesson with a 7-0 non-conference victory over Minnesota, Crookston this afternoon, Sept. 14, at a rain soaked Husky Stadium.
Less than seven minutes into the game, senior Kara Larsen (Isanti, Minn.) took a crossing pass from Chelsey Scheller (Maple Grove, Minn.) and beat the UMC goalkeeper for her first goal of the season. Lindsey Sather (Eden Prairie, Minn. was credited with the second assist. At the 14:17 mark of the opening half, it was déjà vu as the same SCSU trio hooked up again to put the home team ahead 2-0.
The Golden Eagles Justine Jones got a yellow card right in front of the Husky goal which set up the Huskies Tara Evangelist (Mahtomedi, Minn.) for a penalty kick which she ripped past the UMC goalkeeper to put SCSU up 3-0. Later in the first Sather took a pass from Scheller and Jessie Cody (Menomonie, Wis.) for her second goal of 2008 and SCSU was up 4-0 with less than 20 minutes off the clock in the opening half.
First year Kelly Peterson (Cottage Grove, Wis.) netted her first career goal when senior Jillian Sauer (Stevens Point, Wis.) found her sprinting through the Golden Eagle defense while fellow rookie Kyrsten Flynn-Wallace (Bismarck, N.D.) took control of a loose ball in front of the UMC net and scored for her second goal of the season to give the Huskies a 6-0 advantage at halftime. Flynn-Wallace also tacked on the seventh and final goal for SCSU with an assist from Scheller at the 58:41 mark.
Larsen and Flynn-Wallce finish with two goals each while Scheller also nets four points coming off her four assists. Elizabeth Kelly (Omaha, Neb.) started the game in goal for SCSU and made two saves before she got to rest while Kaitlin Kelly (West Allis, Wis.) took the reins in the second half and also tallied a pair of saves.
For the game SCSU out-shot the Golden Eagles 29-7 and held an 18-4 advantage in shots on goal. The seven goals scored by SCSU are the most by a Husky squad since their 9-0 drubbing of Mayville State on Sept. 17, 2004. Against Division II opponents, the Huskies haven’t found the net seven times since they took down Morningside 7-3 on Oct. 15, 2000. The home opener for SCSU, the Huskies are now 4-1 all-time in Husky Stadium openers.
St. Cloud State will take their 2-2 record into NSIC play next weekend as they stay home to host Augustana and Wayne State on Sept. 20 and 21 respectively. Augie is 3-1-1 on the year while Wayne State is 0-5-1.
