Marquette, Mich. – The St. Cloud State soccer team earned a 2-1 victory today, Aug. 30, in their season opener at the Wildcat Soccer Invite in a non-conference tilt with Minnesota Duluth. The game was also the debut of the Huskies new head coach Becky Heiberger, who begins her career with the Huskies 1-0.
Senior Mary Sertich (Duluth, Minn.) scored the game's first goal at the 22:22 mark of the first half to give the Huskies the 1-0 advantage. The senior was assisted on the play by newcomers Alexandra Pafko (Blaine, Minn.) and Tara Evangelist (Mahtomedi, Minn.).
The Huskies took the 1-0 advantage over the Bulldogs into the break, but shortly after play resumed in the second half, UMD tied the game on a goal from Becky Anderson at the 49:17 mark.
Over 20 minutes of play went by with the score tied before first year Kyrsten Flynn-Wallace (Bismarck, N.D.) gave the Huskies back the lead with her first career goal at 73:19. Sertich got back in the scoring mix with an assist on the game winner.
Husky goalkeeper Elizabeth Kelly (Omaha, Neb.) would make the 2-1 lead stand up over the game’s final minutes and she finished with five saves on the day. Each team managed 10 total shots on the day with UMD holding a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
The Huskies sit at 1-0 as Heiberger records her first win at SCSU and Evangelist, Flynn-Wallace and Pafko net their first points as Huskies.
After the game Heiberger had to say, “It’s a great feeling to get the first win, I think the girls played really well, and really controlled the game.”
SCSU will play one more game at the Wildcat Soccer Invite tomorrow, Aug. 31, when they take on the host Northern Michigan at 2:00 p.m.
