The Becky Heiberger-McCabe Story

Becky Heiberger-McCabe comes into her fourth season with the Huskies after posting a solid 10-8-1 record in 2010, which included a 7-5-1 record in the always rugged Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

The Huskies have posted back-to-back 10 win seasons under the leadership of Heiberger-McCabe, and they have not finished below .500 in the three seasons of the Heiberger-McCabe era.

The Huskies recorded a school-record nine shutouts in 2009 and the first conference tournament win in school history. Heiberger’s 2009 squad beat Bemidji State University 1-1 in a 6-5 shootout in the first round of the 2009 NSIC tournament to make it into the second round of play where the Huskies’ successful season ended in a 2-1 loss to the University Minnesota Duluth. SCSU was 10-5-5, 9-2-2 NSIC during the 2009 season.

It was only the second time in school history the Huskies have recorded a double-digit win season, and it’s the most wins since going 13-5-2 in 1995. Heiberger-McCabe

In her first season at SCSU, Heiberger led the Huskies to a solid 8-8-2 record, and a 6-5-2 record in the highly competitive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. SCSU also qualified for play in the 2008 NSIC tournament, thanks to its seventh place overall finish in the league. SCSU's eight wins were the most since 2004, and it marked the team's best win total in team history.

Heiberger previously served as the head women’s soccer coach at the University of South Dakota from
2005 to 2007. At USD, her teams were ranked among the top ten in the regional rankings and in 2005,becky
Heiberger’s Coyotes participated in the NCAA Division II soccer tournament. That same year, the team was nationally ranked for the first time in program history at No. 6.

At USD, Heiberger’s teams charted a 31-23-5 overall record, and she gained North Central Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2005. Her players gained numerous conference and regional honors at USD, and Heiberger also served as the director of the University of South Dakota Soccer Camps youth instructional program.

Her coaching experience has included stints as a graduate assistant coach at Creighton University (2004) and the University of Tennessee-Martin (2003). In 2007, Heiberger completed her masters of science in recreation administration at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Heiberger served as an assistant director at Bruce Erickson’s Soccer Camps and Academies in Omaha, Neb. in 2004-05, and worked with the camp staff from 2000 to 2003. Her coaching resume also includes work with Omaha’s NFC Soccer Club and the West Omaha Gladiator Soccer Club.

She has two coaching licenses from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the United States Soccer Federation.

A standout collegiate player from 1998 to 2002 at NCAA Division I Creighton University, Heiberger served as a team captain in 2001 and 2002. She helped lead Creighton to the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament title in 2002, and an NCAA tournament appearance in 2002. In 1999, Heiberger earned All-MVC second team honors at Creighton.

A native of Sioux Falls, S.D., Heiberger currently resides in nearby Sauk Rapids. She was recently married to former SCSU Athletic Media Relations Graduate Assistant Pat McCabe in early August of 2010.

Elizabeth Kelly

Elizabeth Kelly is in her first season as an assistant coach with the St. Cloud State University women's soccer team in 2011.. A native of Omaha, Neb., Kelly returns to campus after spending the 2010 season as an assistant coach with the women's soccer program at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

A standout goalkeeper for the Huskies from 2006-09, Kelly enjoyed a career that made her one of the most decorated goalkeepers in school history, ranking at or near the top in almost every statistical category.

In four seasons (2006-09), Kelly appeared in 68 games, going 26-29-11, her marks for wins and ties being school records. Kelly also holds school records for shutouts (16) and minutes played (5946). A three-year captain for the Huskies, Kelly was a two-time NSIC All-Conference selection (2006, 2009). In 2006 she was named NCC Freshman of the Year and in 2009 helped the Huskies earn their first-ever NSIC conference tournament win. She was named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week at least once in each of her last three seasons.

Kelly is a product of Omaha's Marian High School and also was a member of the West Omaha Gladiator Kologne club team. A student-athlete honor roll member at SCSU, Kelly received her undergraduate degree from SCSU in 2010.

 

 

Megan Almanzo

Megan Almanzo begins her 1st season as an assistant coach with the Huskies in 2011. She previously served as an assistant coach at Augsburg College for five seasons (2006 to 2010).

Almanzo was a four-year starter as a midfielder/defender at the University of Connecticut (1999-2002), a team that made three appearances in the NCAA Division I Elite Eight in her career. She earned second-team all-region honors during her career with the Huskies, which were ranked as high as No. 4 nationally in her senior season. Almanzo appeared in 87 games (65 starts) as a Huskie, with seven goals and six assists for 20 points. She had three career game-winning goals.

A native of New Hope, Minn., Almanzo was a two-time conference player of the year selection at Robbinsdale Armstrong HS. She earned all-conference honors three times, all-state honors twice and was named Star-Tribune Metro Player of the Year in 1998. She was also named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America team that season. She was Armstrong's Athena Award recipient her senior year.

After her collegiate playing days ended, Almanzo made the preseason roster for the San Diego Spirit of the Women’s United Soccer Association. She competed for the U.S. Women’s Amateur National “B” team in 2003 and 2004, and played for and captained the USL W-League’s Minnesota Lightning from 2003-2009.
