ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The St. Cloud State University nordic ski finally saw action in Alaska, as they competed in the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships at Kincaid Park in Anchorage on Monday, Jan. 5.
Hampered by cold weather, the races on Jan. 3 and Jan. 4, were cancelled because the temperature was below the minimum safety standards. Temperatures warmed enough on Jan. 5 for the women's 5K freestyle race to be ran on the course at Kincaid Park. Of note, the 10K classic technique race slated for Tuesday, Jan. 6 was also cancelled due to the cold weather in Anchorage. A classic sprint race is scheduled for Jan. 7 (weather permitting) and the championship is scheduled to conclude on Jan. 8, with a team sprint race.
For the women, Alaska had four of the top seven conference skiers in the 5K. Anna Coulter, a 2008 NCAA All-American, led the way in 16:08 (26th place) while twin sister Julia Pierson was 10 seconds back in 30th place. Marie-Helen Soderman of Northern Michigan was 31st less than a second later while Kelly Chaudoin of GAC took 40th in 16:34 and Laura DeWitt of NMU was 49th in 16:41.
For the Huskies, Jenny Beckman was the top finisher for the squad in the freestyle race. She finished 22nd among the CCSA racers with a time of 19:57 on the 5K course. Overall, Beckman placed 154th in the race.
SCSU's Diane Vezendy placed 24th among the CCSA athletes with a time of 20:12 (she was 158th overall), while teammate Mariah Featherly was 25th with a time of 20:32 (160th overall). The SCSU contingent was rounded out by Amy Peterson, who placed 28th among CCSA racers with a time of 22:33 (165th overall).
