St. Cloud State completed its two-day run at the Mt. Itasca SuperTour in Coleraine, Minn. on Jan. 24-25. The first day consisted of a 10K classic race, while the races on the second day were a 10K skate race on the trails at Mt. Itasca. Cold weather greeted the racers both days, as the race time temperature on Jan. 25 was -1.
As a team, SCSU placed eighth overall among the CCSA teams with 43 points. Northern Michigan was the top CCSA team in the race with 153 points, while the field was completed by Michigan Tech (121), Gustavus Adolphus (118), UW-Green Bay (97), St. Olaf (78), St. Benedict's (70), St. Scholastica (64), SCSU (43) and Northland (10).
On Jan. 25, SCSU's Jenny Beckman finished 28th among CCSA racers with a time of 37:51.2 in the 10K skate race. Teammate Amy Peterson placed 34th among CCSA skiers with a time of 38:58.1 and Mariah Featherly placed 38th with a time of 39:19.8. Christina Ringsmuth placed 50th at 42:57.7 and Elizabeth Willis placed 52nd with a time of 45:38.1. To complete the group, Katelyn Prow placed 53rd with a time of 46:39.9.
In the overall race, Caitlin Compton of the CXC Elite team topped the field with a time of 27:48.7 in the 10K skate race. Kelly Chaudoin of Gustavus Adolphus was the top college racer with a time of 31:09.7.
On Jan. 24 in the 10K classic race, Diane Vezendy led the Huskies with a 25th place finish among CCSA racers with a time of 36:15.7, while teammate Jenny Beckman placed 30th with a time of 36:59.2. SCSU's Amy Peterson was 33rd with a time of 37:14.4. In 34th place among CCSA racers was SCSU's Mariah Featherly with a time of 37:18.3. SCSU's Christinia Ringsmuth placed 45th with a time of 40:29.4 and Elizabeth Willis was 54th with a time of 42:58.9. SCSU's group was completed by Katelyn Prow in 56th place at 45:21.
Laura DeWitt of Northern Michigan University had the best result among Central Collegiate Ski Association schools, taking fourth overall in 31 minutes, 32 seconds. NMU teammates Marie Helen Soderman (sixth in 31:52) and Christina Gillis (11th in 32:12) followed DeWitt in the conference standings. Elizabeth Quinley of Michigan Tech and Carolyn Freeman of Wisconsin-Green Bay rounded out the top five.Kristina Strandberg, skiing for Saab Salomon Team, easily won the 10-kilometer overall race in 29:41. She was followed by Lindsey (Weier) Dehlin of the U.S. Ski Team (30:35) and Caitlin Compton of CXC (30:57). Dehlin and Compton both skied in college at NMU. Saturday’s race was the second of nine NCAA-qualifiers for the CCSA.
The third will be Sunday’s interval-start freestyle races that are scheduled to begin at noon at Mount Itasca. The weather is not expected to be much warmer.
