St. Cloud, Minn. -- The University of North Dakota (2-4-1, 2-4-1 WCHA) women's hockey team defeated St. Cloud State University (1-6-0, 0-5-0 WCHA) in overtime by a score of 5-4 on Friday, Oct. 30, in the National Hockey Center.

Senior forward Meaghan Pezon (Eden Prairie) had a career night for the Huskies, as she erupted for two goals and two assists in the loss, bringing her career point total to 63 (32g, 31a) in 107 games played in the Cardinal and Black. Pezon’s four points tonight mark a new personal career-high mark for most points scored in a single game.

The Huskies cracked the scoreboard first with a power play goal from team captain Felicia Nelson (St. Paul) at the 6:22 mark of the first frame. Pezon and senior Holly Roberts (St. Cloud) assisted on power play goal, which snapped an 0-of-35 drought for the Huskies on the player advantage. North Dakota knotted the score at 1-1 just before the first intermission, as Holly Perkins connected on her first goal of the season at 19:40 with assists from Megan Gilbert and Alyssa Wiebe.

After 20 minutes of play, UND was out-shooting the Huskies 13-8.

St. Cloud State came out of the first intermission with a little more jump in their skates, as SCSU out-shot North Dakota 12-5 in the second period. North Dakota took its first lead of the evening with a goal from Wiebe at 09:09. The Huskies were quick to respond, as Pezon stormed into the North Dakota zone to chart her second score of the season and knot the score at 2-2. Sophomores Brittany Toor (Hartland, Mich.) and Jaclyn Daggit (St. Paul Park) each added their first assists of the season on the Pezon goal.

Before the end of the second frame, SCSU’s Pezon gathered her second goal of the game and third of the season to give the Huskies the one-goal advantage on the power play.  Seniors Caitlin Hogan (Oakdale) and F. Nelson assisted on the goal.

Holding a slight advantage in shots heading into the final period of regulation, 20-18, the Huskies gave up two UND goals to start the period and found themselves trailing 4-3. North Dakota tabbed its third goal of the game just 13 seconds after the second intermission to tie the game at 3-3. At the 07:17 mark, UND’s Sara Dagenais tallied her second goal of the season to give North Dakota the 4-3 advantage.

St. Cloud State’s power play came through late in the game, as Hogan connected for her sixth goal of the season at 18:17 to even the score at 4-4 and force the game into overtime. Of note, Pezon and Roberts were awarded the assists on the Hogan score.

In overtime, SCSU’s Holly Roberts was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for holding, which set up North Dakota for the power play advantage. Ashley Nixon (Blaine), St. Cloud State’s junior goalie, was unable to stop the UND extra skater attack, as North Dakota’s Kelly Lewis sent a wrister to the back of the net for the game-winning goal at the 2:26 mark of the overtime period.

North Dakota has now defeated St. Cloud State four of the last five meetings between the two schools.
