St. Cloud, Minn. – Looking to bounce back from a tough road series against the University of Minnesota-Duluth, the St. Cloud State Huskies (1-4-0, 0-3-0 WCHA) would not have an easy task at hand. Facing off against the No. 2 University of Minnesota Gophers (7-0-0, 5-0-0 WCHA), the Huskies dropped Friday afternoon’s contest 4-0 in the National Hockey Center.

Minnesota wouldn’t waste any time getting on the board first, as the Gophers scored just :28 into the contest. Minnesota’s Brittany Francis and Sarah Erickson connected with junior forward Emily West for her sixth goal of the season. The Huskies would hold the Gophers to within one after the first period, as the U of M outshot SCSU 13 to 11 through one period.

Minnesota would yet again score early to open a period, this time scoring just under three minutes into the second period. West and first year Mira Jalosuo charted assists on Sarah Erickson’s first of two goals on the afternoon to put the Gophers up 2-0.

Minnesota would add to their lead just under three minutes later as junior Laura May would net an unassisted short handed goal, beating SCSU junior netminder Ashley Nixon (Blaine, Minn.) five-hole. The Gophers would net their final goal just a minute and a half later, as St. Cloud native Anne Schleper and West charted assists on Erickson’s second goal. Minnesota outshot St. Cloud State 17-9 in the second period.

The Huskies and Gophers would hold each other scoreless in the third period, despite a combined four power play opportunities, two for each team. Of note, SCSU and the U of M tied on shots in the third period, at 12 apiece.

In nets, SCSU’s Nixon stopped 38 of 42 Gophers shots in the loss, dropping her record to 1-2-0 overall on the year. For Minnesota, freshman Noora Raty stopped all 32 Huskies shots faced, improving her record to 5-0-0 overall.

The Huskies and Gophers will finish their home and home set tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 24, with game two from Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. Game time is set for 4:07 pm.
