WOMEN'S HOCKEY: St. Cloud State Weekly Notes

HOME-AND-HOME: After taking a week off from competition, the Huskies return to action on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23-24, for a home-and-home series against No. 2 Minnesota. Friday’s game is slated for 2:07 pm in the National Hockey Center and Saturday’s game is set for 4:07 pm at Ridder Arena.
HUSKY RECORD: The Huskies are 1-3-0 overall in 2009-10 and 0-2-0 in the WCHA. To view complete season statistics, click here.
GIESEN VS. MINNESOTA: SCSU’s head coach Jeff Giesen is 1-10-1 all-time against Minnesota.
MINNESOTA BRIEFLY:

Series: U of M leads 39-2-1 since the 1998-99 season.

THE SERIES: Minnesota currently leads the all-time series with the Huskies, 39-2-1, dating back to Jan. 9, 1999. Last season, the Huskies went 0-4-0 against the nationally ranked Gophers.
LAST TIME OUT: The St. Cloud State women’s hockey squad (1-3-0, 0-2-0 WCHA) suffered a series sweep to No. 4/6 Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 10-11 at the DECC to open up WCHA regular season play. The Bulldogs were victorious on Saturday evening, 5-3, and completed the sweep with a 2-0 shutout win on Sunday afternoon over the Huskies.
THREE CHEERS FOR HOGAN: Senior forward Caitlin Hogan (Oakdale) was the lone Husky to score on the weekend against Minnesota Duluth, charting St. Cloud State’s first hat trick since senior Holly Roberts (St. Cloud) netted three goals against Vermont back on November 4, 2006. Hogan’s three goals on Saturday night (Oct. 10) were the most ever in a game for the team alternate captain as she leads the squad with six points (5g, 1a) in four games played.
HUSKY HELPERS: Garnering assists on the weekend for SCSU against Minnesota Duluth was Kylie Lane (Roseau), Holly Roberts (St. Cloud) and Diana Karouzos (Chicago, Ill.). Of note, Roberts had two on the weekend and is second on the squad with three points in 2009-10 (0g, 3a).
IN THE NETS: Ashley Nixon (Blaine) had her hands full for the Huskies stopping 39-of-44 Bulldogs shots in the first game of the series on Oct. 10. The loss dropped Nixon’s record to 1-1-0 and 0-1-0 in the WCHA. Sophomore Tayler VanDenakker (Winnipeg, Manitoba) stopped 29-of-31 Bulldogs shots in the loss for SCSU on Sunday (Oct. 11), dropping her record to 0-2-0 and 0-1-0 in the WCHA.
ALUMNI GAME SCHEDULED: The St. Cloud State University women’s hockey program has scheduled its third annual Alumni Game for Saturday, Nov. 7, from 4:15 pm-5:15 pm at the National Hockey Center. For a complete story, click here.
FREE YOUTH CLINIC AVAILABLE: The St. Cloud State University women’s hockey program will offer a free youth hockey clinic for all girls age 14 and under on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on the main rink at the St. Cloud State’s National Hockey Center.
HOGAN AT THE HELM: In four games played in 2009-10, SCSU’s senior forward Caitlin Hogan (Oakdale) leads the squad with six points (5g, 1a), including one SHG, one GWG and one hat trick. Hogan’s six points rank her tied for fourth in the league in overall scoring.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS: Caitlin Hogan’s 90 career points (39g, 51a) currently rank her fourth all-time in the Cardinal and Black. Of note, SCSU’s Roxy Stang (2000-04) is the lone Husky to score over 100 career points. Stang completed her career with 119 points (71g, 48a).
FIVE ALIVE: Hogan’s five goals this season are tied for second-best in the WCHA. Also, Hogan is one of five players in the league to chart a short-handed goal this season.
TIED FOR TEN: SCSU’s rookie defender Jocelyn Zabrick (Airdrie, Alberta) is tied for 10th in the league for defenseman scoring wtih two points (2a).

HEARING THE HUSKIES: SCSU women’s hockey action will be heard live on KVSC 88.1 FM this Friday, Oct. 23, as well as streamed live at www.kvsc.org for the home game in the NHC. KVSC's Matt Bishop will be providing the play-by-play and KVSC's Joe Clemence will be doing color commentary. Zack Fisch will be also be calling the plays from ice side.
SCSU’s HEAD COACH JEFF GIESEN: Jeff “Goose” Giesen begins his fourth season at the helm of Husky Hockey in 2009-10 and became SCSU’s all-time winningest women’s hockey coach, garnering his 46th career win on Friday, Oct. 2, against Niagara in the Nat’l Hockey Center. A native of Blaine, Minn., Giesen is the third head coach since the inception of the women’s program in 1998. Giesen tallied his first career victory against Robert Morris on Sept. 29, 2006, with a 4-0 shutout in the NHC. Giesen’s career coaching record stands at 46-54-16 in three seasons along with a 29-45-12 mark in the ever grueling WCHA. A 1993 graduate of St. Cloud State University and a true student of the game, Coach Giesen and his wife Karla reside in St. Cloud, Minn. with their daughters Delaney and Maleah.
