WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Huskies Drop Second of Two Against Bulldogs, Earn Weekend Split

St. Cloud, Minn--Looking to add to their two game conference win streak, the St. Cloud State University Huskies (3-7-0, 2-6-0 WCHA) were shutout at the National Hockey Center, dropping a 5-0 game against the No. 5 University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (7-5-0, 5-3-0 WCHA) and earning a weekend split.
UMD would get on the scoreboard first in the contest after senior Danielle Hirsch (St. Paul, Minn.) took a double minor penalty, negating a Huskies power play. Junior forward Laura Fridfinnson netted her fifth goal of the year for the Bulldogs, as freshman forward Audrey Cournoyer and senior defender Jamie Rasmussen charted assists on the goal. The tally came at the 17:38 mark of the first period and was an even strength four on four goal.
The Bulldogs would add to their success with Hirsch still in the penalty box, this time scoring early into the second period. Minnesota-Duluth would score just :27 into the period, as Vanessa Thibault scored her second goal in as many games, assists were credited to freshman Jessica Wong and Cornoyer.
Cournoyer would add her third assist of the game later in the second period, as Duluth scored at the 15:08 mark to make it 3-0. The goal was Freshman Katie Wilson’s fourth of the year, as senior Emmanuelle Blais and Cournoyer were credited with the helpers.
Minnesota-Duluth would add to their lead late in the third period with two quick goals in the final quarter of the period. Sophomore Kacy Ambroz would net her first goal of the season at the 15:25 mark, as the lone assist was credited to sophomore Justine Fisher. Then, just twenty-six seconds later, Wilson would net her second goal of the game, as Blais charted her second assist of the contest.
In nets, sophomore Tayler VanDenakker (Winnipeg, Manitoba) stopped 29 of 34 Bulldogs’ shots faced in the loss for SCSU, dropping her record to 1-4-0 on the season. Junior Ashley Nixon (Blaine, Minn.), who replaced VanDenakker late in the third period, stopped all three shots she faced. For UMD, freshman Jennifer Harss stopped all 24 Huskies shots, improving her record to 7-5-0 during the 2009-10 campaign.
Next up for the SCSU is a trip north to take on the Bemidji State Beavers on Friday, November 13 (7:07 pm) and Saturday, November 14 (2:07 pm). Both games can be heard live on KVSC.ORG as Matt Bishop will have the call of both games from the John Glas Fieldhouse.
