St. Cloud, Minn. - The St. Cloud State University Huskies (3-6-0, 2-5-0 WCHA) relied on great play from their top lines and superior goaltending to upset the No. 5 University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (6-5-0, 4-3-0 WCHA) at the National Hockey Center on Friday, November 6th. Senior Holly Roberts netted two goals, while junior netminder Ashley Nixon stopped 31 of 32 UMD shots in the win.

The Huskies were first to reach the scoreboard, netting the game's opening goal at the 14:56 mark of the first period. Senior defender Kelly Meierhoffer (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) assisted senior forward Meaghan Pezon (Eden Prairie, Minn.) on the goal to put St. Cloud State up 1-0. SCSU and UMD would skate to a 1-0 Husky advantage at the end of the first period, with SCSU leading the shots on goal 16-10.

Early in the second period, sophomore forward Brittany Toor (Hartland, Mich.) netted the eventual game-winner, after collecting a rebound off a shot by first year forward Callie Dahl (Stillwater, Minn.). First year forward Kylie Lane (Roseau, Minn.) charted the second assist on Toor's goal, the assist was Lane's third of the 2009-10 season.

Minnesota Duluth would pull to within one goal just under a minute later, when Vanessa Thibault would net her first goal of the season. Assists were credited to Jamie Rasmussen and Audrey Cournoyer on the goal.

Minnesota Duluth would stay to within one goal of the Huskies, until the Bulldogs Sarah Murray would net an own goal on goalie Jennifer Harss. After a puck was played by SCSU senior forward Holly Roberts (St. Cloud, Minn.), Murray turned around between the circles, only to kick the puck five-hole on Harss. Roberts was credited with the lone point on the unassisted goal.

SCSU would continue forward with their foot on the gas pedel, as they added to their lead near the halfway mark of the third and final period. Roberts would net her second goal of the game, on a perfect one-timer from senior captain Felicia Nelson (St. Paul, Minn.). As Nelson collected a pass from senior Caitlin Hogan (Oakdale, Minn.), Nelson went wide on the left wing, fired a pass across the crease, allowing Roberts to tap home an easy goal to go up 4-1.

Felicia Nelson would net the final goal of the contest at the 13:31 mark of the period to ice a 5-1 SCSU win. The goal was unassisted.

"We played a great 60 minutes tonight," head coach Jeff Giesen remarked after Friday's win. "That was the best game that we've played all year. Our big players stepped up and made the plays they needed to tonight."

In net for SCSU, junior goalie Ashley Nixon (Blaine, Minn.) stopped 31 of 32 Bulldogs shots, improving her record to 2-3-0 on the year. For UMD, Harss stopped 32 of 37 shots dropping her record to 5-5-0.
