WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Huskies Split Series With UND, Gain First WCHA Win of Season

St. Cloud, Minn. - (VIDEO INTERVIEWS WITH NELSON & COACH GIESEN included at end of story) The St. Cloud State University women's hockey team (2-6-0, 1-5-0 WCHA) gained its first WCHA victory of the 2009-10 campaign with a big 3-2 win over North Dakota (2-5-1, 2-5-1 WCHA) on Saturday, Oct. 31 at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
Senior forward Felicia Nelson (St. Paul) lifted the Huskies to the winner's circle with a pair of goals in the contest, including the game winner at 12:29 of the third period with an assist from senior forward Caitlin Hogan (Oakdale). The goal was Nelson's third marker of the 2009-10 season.
Nelson started the Huskies' attack in the first period with a goal at 13:17, as assist were provided by senior Meaghan Pezon (Eden Prairie) and senior Danielle Hirsch (Bloomington). North Dakota responded with an unassisted goal by Jordan Slavin at 18:58 to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
In the third period, SCSU pushed its lead to 2-1 with Hogan's seventh goal of the season at 1:54. Pezon and senior Holly Roberts (St. Cloud) had the assist on the power play effort by the Huskies. Nelson's second goal proved to be the game winner as she scored on a shot from between the circles that got past UND netminder Stephanie Ney.
North Dakota closed the gap to 3-2 in the closing seconds of play when Ashley Furia scored at 19:54, just when UND was in the process of pulling its goalie.
In the game, SCSU outshot UND by a 34-24 margin. In the first period alone, the Huskies outshot UND 14-9. In the nets, sophomore Tayler VanDenakker (Winnipeg, Manitoba) earned her first win of the season with 22 saves to her credit. Ney had 31 saves in the loss for UND. On the advantage, SCSU was 1-of-6 and UND was 0-of-5.
The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for the Huskies, as they prepare for an upcoming series at home against Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 6-7 at the National Hockey Center. Both games against UMD will start at 7:07 p.m.
