SCSU Netminder Tayler VanDenakker

SCSU netminder Tayler VanDenakker stopped 29 of 31 UMD shots in her first conference game of the season.

Duluth, Minn – Looking to bounce back from a tough loss Saturday against the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (3-1-0, 2-0-0 WCHA), head coach of the St. Cloud State University Huskies (1-3-0, 0-2-0 WCHA) Jeff Giesen decided to change things up in the final game of the two game tilt. The Huskies would hold the Bulldogs close throughout the game, but after a late goal with just 8.2 seconds left, SCSU fell to Duluth 2-0.

The Huskies would start the game off on the right foot, earning their first power play of the game just :57 seconds in. St. Cloud’s only chance during their first power play came on a shot the sailed just over the crossbar. SCSU had three power play opportunities in the first period, but proved unsuccessful on the advantage against UMD.

The Huskies and Bulldogs continued their scoreless battle until UMD would score their first of two goals in the game. St. Cloud State sophomore netminder Tayler VanDenakker (Winnipeg, Manitoba) would make the first save but Bulldogs would nail home the game winning goal into a open net with VanDenakker out of position after the initial save. UMD’s Katie Wilson charted the goal for the Bulldogs with the lone assist going to Audrey Cournoyer.

UMD would score an insurance goal with just 8.2 seconds remaining, as Maria Posa scored with assists to Vanessa Thibault and Emmanuelle Blais.

The Huskies would have several opportunities throughout the game on the power play, but were unable to land a critical goal. SCSU went 0-8 on the power play on the afternoon, including 0-4 in the third period. On a positive special teams note, St. Cloud State went 5-5 killing off Bulldogs penalties.

In net, VanDenakker stopped 29 of 31  in the loss for SCSU, the loss drops her record to 0-2-0 and 0-1-0 in the WCHA. For the Bulldogs, Jennifer Harss got the win, stopping all 24 St. Cloud State shots faced.

"Tayler (VanDenakker) gave us a chance to win today," head coach Jeff Giesen said after Sunday’s loss. "I thought the overall effort by the team was good too, we just need to figure our power play out."

The Huskies have an off week before playing the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers in a home and home series. On Friday, October 23, the Huskies play host to the U of M at 2:07 pm at the National Hockey Center. The Huskies and Gophers will then travel south to Ridder Arena on Saturday, October 24 for game two of the series.
