WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Huskies Plan to “Go Red”

St. Cloud, Minn. – On Friday, Feb. 6, the St. Cloud State University women’s hockey squad will be honoring women and heart disease with a campaign to "Go Red" prior to and during their home game against Minnesota State in the National Hockey Center.
SCSU plans to wear their red St. Cloud uniforms for the WCHA contest with MSU and an honorary drop-of-the-puck will be made by SCSU professor Joanna Pucel, a heart disease survivor, before the start of the game.
Below are just a few relevant statistics dealing with women and heart disease.
Relevant Heart Disease Statistics
- Cardiovascular disease (CVD) kills more than 450,000 women a year, approximately one per minute.
- 41 million American women are living with cardiovascular disease.
- More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next five causes of death combined, including cancer.
- While 1 in 30 American women die of breast cancer, more than 1 in 3 die from cardiovascular disease.
- An estimated 61 percent of American women are overweight or obese.
- Nearly 70 percent of all American women are sedentary and get no regular leisure-time physical activity.
- One in three American adults has some form of cardiovascular disease, claiming more lives than any other cause of death.
- On average, an American dies of CVD every 37 seconds.
- Sixty-four percent of women who die suddenly of coronary heart disease have no previous symptoms.
- Stroke is the No. 3 cause of death for American women and is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability.
- Stroke kills more women than men. In 2005, females represented 61 percent of stroke deaths.
The honorary "Go Red" game between the Huskies and the Mavericks is slated to begin at 7:07 p.m. on Feb. 6, 2009.
