Alumni Weekend and Decade Celebration a Success
St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State University women’s hockey program celebrated its second annual Alumni Weekend during Homecoming Week on Saturday, Oct. 18, in the National Hockey Center. Three former coaches and 14 alumni returned for the weekend, which also featured the decade celebration of women’s hockey at SCSU.
The second annual alumni game, which was played in the NHC before the Husky game against Minnesota Duluth that afternoon, featured 10 alumni back on the ice in the Cardinal and Black. Those alumni included: Laura (Gieselman) Evanson (1999-03), Rachel Solgon (2002-06), Kari Turkowski (2003-05), Roxy Stang (2000-04), Amanda (Mathison) Pickett (1999-03), Brittni Kuyper (2004-08), Denelle Maguet (2004-07), Kobi (Kawamoto) Trevis (2000-04), Hailey Clarkson (2004-07) and Carmen Lizee (2004-08).
After the alumni game, the Center Ice Club helped sponsor a lunch for the alumni, family and friends that returned for the weekend.
Each coach and alumni that returned was given a Decade of Women’s Hockey at SCSU t-shirt and poster, along with a St. Cloud State cooler.
Before the WCHA showdown between St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth at 5:07 p.m. in the NHC, an announcement was made honoring SCSU’s athletic director Dr. Morris Kurtz, the WCHA’s assistant commissioner Sara Martin, SCSU’s first women’s hockey coach Kerry Brodt-Wethington (1998-2002) and SCSU’s former assistant coaches David Prokop and Laura Slominski.
After the announcements of the administrators and the introductions of the Huskies and Bulldogs were complete, SCSU’s first head coach Kerry Brodt-Wethington did an honorary drop-of-the-puck at center ice. Accompanying Kerry to center ice was SCSU’s senior team captain Brita Schroeder (Monticello) and UMD’s team captain Saara Tuominen.
“It was great to have our alumni back and the return of three former coaches,” said SCSU’s third-year head coach Jeff Giesen. “Overall it was a great celebration of both a decade of women’s hockey at St. Cloud State and of Homecoming.”
