MEN's HOCKEY: SCSU Drops First of Two Against Michigan Tech, 3-1.
Friday, October 30, 2009
SCSU's Garret Roe had the lone goal for SCSU, moving him to within one point of becoming the 21st player in SCSU history with 100 career points. |
Houghton, Mich. – Looking to improve off a solid weekend against Minnesota-Duluth, the St. Cloud State Huskies (2-3-2, 1-1-1 WCHA) would travel east to take on the Michigan Tech Huskies (2-3-0, 1-2-0 WCHA). But SCSU would have no easy task, as Michigan Tech was able to secure a 3-1 win thanks in part to a short handed goal early into the third period.
St. Cloud State and Michigan Tech would hold each other scoreless through the first period of play. SCSU out shot MTU through one eight to five, with eight different St. Cloud State skaters firing shots on net.
Michigan Tech would find the back of the net first in the contest. At the 10:23 mark of the second period, MTU’s John Kivisto scored on slap shot from the left point, the goal was unassisted. SCSU would waste little time in tying the contest up at one apiece. First year Taylor Johnson (Hugo, Minn.) would connect a pass with junior forward Tony Mosey (Prior Lake, Minn.) who fed a perfect pass between the circles to junior Garrett Roe (Vienna, Va) who buried the shot on MTU netminder Kevin Genoe.
The goal was Roe's 99th point of his career and moves him to within one point of becoming the 21st player in SCSU history to amass 100 points.
SCSU and Michigan Tech would remain tied until about a quarter into the third period, when MTU would break the tie on the penalty kill. After collecting a pass from Doriott, sophomore Brett Olson went in all alone, beating SCSU first year netminder Mike Lee (Roseau, Minn.) stick side.
Alex Macleod would add a late empty net goal with :08 left in the third period, as assists were credited to Olson and Malcolm Gwilliam.
In nets, Lee made 20 saves on 22 Michigan Tech shots, dropping his record to 1-2-2 on the season and 0-1-1 in the WCHA. For MTU, Genoe stopped 26 of 27 SCSU shots, improving his record to 1-1-0 on the year and 1-0-0 in the WCHA.
