Stephenson Gains GWG in OT at UND

Grand Forks, ND - St. Cloud State men's hockey gained its first-ever sweep at North Dakota with a 2-1 overtime win on Jan. 28, in Grand Forks, N.D. The game winner was notched by sophomore defender Matt Stephenson at :18 of the OT session with assists provided by Brock Hooton and Grant Clafton. The goal was Stephenson's first career goal at SCSU.
St. Cloud State gained an early lead in the contest on Jan. 28, as sophomore forward Andrew Gordon scored at 2:23 of the first period. Senior forward Brock Hooton got the play going as he picked up a loose puck at mid-ice and outraced the UND defense to the net, where he founded an open Gordon for the score past UND netminder Jordan Parise.
UND tied the game up at 10:16 of the first period with a goal by T.J. Oshie, as the assist was provided by Parise on the play.
In the second period, both teams were held scoreless as Parise and SCSU netminder Bobby Goepfert put on a show between the pipes. After two periods of play, Goepfert had notched 28 saves while facing 29 shots and Parise had 19 saves.
SCSU and UND skated to a draw in the third period, as the Goepfert-Parise show was in full forcer throughout the period. At the end of regulation, UND led the Huskies in shots at 37-27. SCSU is 14-9-3, 9-8-1 WCHA and they will host Alaska Anchorage on Feb. 3-4.
