Garrett Roe

SCSU's Garrett Roe charted two assists Saturday night in Houghton, Mich. becoming the 21st player in SCSU History with 100 points.

Houghton, Mich. – Looking to bounce back from a tough 3-1 loss Friday night in Houghton, Michigan, St. Cloud State University (3-3-2, 2-1-1 WCHA) would rely on special teams to get the job done, netting two powerplay goals and securing a weekend split with a 3-1 win over Michigan Tech (2-4-0, 1-3-0 WCHA).

The Huskies would take their first lead of the series at the 11:03 mark of the first period when junior forward Tony Mosey (Prior Lake, Minn.) would net his third goal of the season, all of which have been on the powerplay. Assists on the play were credited to sophomore defender Sam Zabkowicz (Greendale, Wis.) and junior forward Garrett Roe (Vienna, Va.).

For Roe, the assist equaled his 100th career point as a St. Cloud State Husky. With the assist, Roe becomes the 21st player in SCSU history to amass 100 career points.

“It’s nice and really is a blessing (to reach the mark),” Roe said after Saturday’s 3-1 win. “I didn’t even know about being at the mark until people started coming up congratulating me. My number one goal when I came on campus was to get win and not score points and we did that tonight.”

St Cloud State would add to their lead at the end of the first period, again on the powerplay. Sophomore forward Drew LeBlanc (Duluth, Minn.) fed a perfect pass across the ice to junior forward Nick Oslund (Savage, Minn.), who buried the shot past MTU netiminder Kevin Genoe, beating him gloveside. The goal was Oslund’s first of the season, while the assist was LeBlanc’s third of the year.

Michigan Tech would climb to within one after an even strength goal at the 2:21 mark of the second period. Malcolm Gwilliam would net his fifth goal of the year, with Steven Seigo and Brett Olson charting assists. Both teams would skate scoreless for the remainder of the second period, as SCSU was outshot 10-8 in the period.

St. Cloud State would get back on the scoreboard in the third period, with an even strength goal scored by junior forward Brian Volpei (Burbank, Ca.). Roe threw a perfect pass between the circles to Volpei who had a wide open net to shoot into. The assist was Roe’s sixth of the 2009-10 campaign.

In net for SCSU, junior Dan Dunn (Oshawa, Ont.) stopped 17 of 18 MTU shots for the win, improving his record to 2-1-0 and 2-0-0 in the WCHA. For Michigan Tech, Genoe stopped 27 of 30 SCSU shots in the loss, dropping his record to 1-2-0 and 1-1-0 in the WCHA. St. Cloud State outshot MTU 30-18 in the contest.

“We played a great defensive game so (Michigan Tech) didn’t have a lot of chances,” head coach Bob Motzko said. “When the game was tight in a one goal game, (Dunn) made the saves that counted and kept us in the game.”

After a bye week next weekend for St. Cloud State, the Huskies will travel north on I-94 to face off with the University of North Dakota. The games will take place on Friday, November 13 (7:37pm) and Saturday, November 14 (7:07pm). Both games can be heard live on KCML Lite 99.9 FM with Don Lyons on the call, or via KVSC 88.1 FM, as Zack Fisch will provide play-by-play.
