Oxford, Ohio - The #13/15 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team took the nation's top ranked team to overtime, but #1/4 Miami University managed to score a 3-2 decision in both squads' regular season openers on Friday, Oct. 9, in Oxford, Ohio. VIDEO INCLUDED AT END OF STORY.
The RedHawks managed to score a goal by Carter Camper at 1:52 of OT with assists from Tommy Wingels and Cameron Schilling. The goal broke a 2-2 deadlock that was set up by SCSU junior forward Brian Volpei (Burbank, Calif.), who tied the game at 18:01 of the third period with assists from sophomore forward Jordy Christian (Moorhead) and sophomore defender Sam Zabkowicz (Greendale, Wis.).
The Huskies hit the scoreboard first with a goal by sophomore defender Oliver Lauridsen (Denmark) at 17:42 of the first period. His slapshot from blueline was assisted by senior defender Craig Gaudet (Redvers, Sask.) and junior forward Garrett Roe (Vienna, Va.).
The goal was Lauridsen's first of his career at SCSU, while the assist was Roe's 94th point during his career with the Huskies.
In the first period, SCSU dominated the offensive end as it outshot MU 14-10. In the second period, Miami charged back into the scene with a goal by Curtis McKenzie at 1:36. Assists were credited to Andy Miele and Jarod Palmer.
MU tied the game at 8:36 of the second period with a power play goal by Pat Cannone. Camper and Chris Wideman had assists on the play.
In the contest, SCSU ended up being outshot by Miami by a 28-24 tally. On the advantage, SCSU was 0-of-5 and Miami was 1-of-5. Both teams were called for seven penalties in the game.
In the nets, junior Dan Dunn (Oshawa, Ont.) made his first start of the new season and charted 25 saves in the contest. Cody Reichard had 22 saves for MU.
Both teams will continue the weekend series on Oct. 10, with a 6:05 (CT) game from Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio. Fans can listen to the game live on KCML FM 99.9 with Don Lyons calling the plays (www.lite999.com).
