MEN'S HOCKEY: SCSU Gains 4-3 Win Over Lethbridge

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #13 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team opened its 2009-10 season with a 4-3 exhibition victory over the University of Lethbridge on Sunday, Oct. 4, at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.  This marked the second time that the Huskies have defeated Lethbridge in exhibtion play, as SCSU also gained a win over the Pronghorns to start the 2006-07 season.

The Huskies were paced in the game by freshman forward Ben Hanowski (Little Falls) and junior forward Brian Volpei (Burbank, Calif.).  The pair each tallied two goals apiece in the game, with Volpei charting the game winner at 13:41 of the third period with assists from junior defender Nic Rioux (Rivere-du-Loup, Que.) and junior forward Garrett Roe (Vienna, Va.).
 
Hanowski opened the SCSU attack with a power play goal at 2:29 of the first period.  Sophomore defender Sam Zabkowicz (Greendale, Wis.) and junior forward Tony Mosey (Prior Lake) each gained assists on the play.  Volpei then pushed the score to 2-0 with a goal just second later at 3:11.  Senior Ryan Peckskamp (Sauk Rapids) and junior forward Nick Oslund (Savage) each had assists on the break-away goal by Volpei.
 
To close the first period, Lethbridge's Jason Roberts made it 2-1 with a power play goal at 5:10.   Austin Davenport and Logan Lovorato posted the assists on the play.  UL knotted the score at 2-2 with a goal by Adam Chorneyko at 14:16 of the second period.  The score stood at 2-2, until Hanowski added his second power play goal of the night at 1:10 of the third period with helpers from senior forward Ryan Lasch (Lake Forest, Calif.) and senior defender Garrett Raboin (Detroit Lakes).
 
The Horns made it interesting with an unassisted score by Chorneyko at 8:18 of the third.  The score held at 3-3, until Volpei lit the lamp with the game-winner.
 
In the game, SCSU outshot the Horns 30-22.  The Huskies were 2-of-7 on the power play and UL was 1-of-6 on the advantage.  In the nets, sophomore Nate Hardy (Hermantown) was the goalie of record with eight saves in the final period of play.  Freshman Mike Lee (Roseau) made six saves in his playing debut in the second period, while junior Dan Dunn (Oshawa, Ont.) had five saves in the first period.  All three SCSU goalies allowed one goal apiece in the game.
 
Reese St. Goodard made 26 saves for the Horns.
 
The Huskies will return to the ice on Oct. 9-10, with a pair of games at #1 Miami (Ohio).  These games will mark the beginning of the regular season for SCSU.

HUSKY HITS: Senior Garrett Raboin was named the team captain for 2009-10, which marks his second consecutive season as the team captain, and his third year as one of the captains.  Junior Aaron Marvin was named as the squad's alternate captain in 2009-10...Mike Ayers will serve as the team's volunteer goalie coach in 2009-10.  He replaces Justin Johnson, who is now the volunteer goalie coach at UM.
