Gothenburg, Nebraska-- The St. Cloud State University men's golf team jumped three places in the third and final round of the NSIC/RMAC Regional Crossover to tie for third place and senior Evan Peters (Glenwood) finished second in the 54-hole event at the Wild Horse Golf Club in Gothenburg, Nebraska on Monday.
The Huskies started the final round in sixth place and then shot the low round of the tournament, a 297 to finish in a third place tie with Colorado School of Mines. Minnesota State University, Mankato won the team title by one stroke (305-315-304) with a 925 stroke total. Nebraska-Kearney was second at 926 and the Huskies posted rounds of 318-317-297 to tie for third at 932.
Peters shot a one over par 73 in the final round to finish the tournament with a 77-73-73=223 total, just two shots behind the individual medalist, Brady Strangstalien of Winona State. Strangstalien shot rounds of 71-79-71 for a 221 total.
Peters has put together two solid weeks of competition as he was named the NSIC Player of the Week last Tuesday after winning medalist honors in the SCSU Husky Classic, a ten team tournament that featured 90 golfers.
Four of the Huskies top five golfers shot in the 70's today in very windy conditions. Among the top ten finishers was St. Cloud State first year golfer Billy Barnhart (Cottage Grove). Barnhart shot 79-79-74=232 to finish tied for eighth place.
Sophomore Beau Anderson (Cottage Grove) tied for 32nd place after shooting 79-85-74=232. Sophomore Jordan Dickey (Faribault) tied for 40th with a score of 83-82-76-241 and junior Alex Dawald (Ortonville) tied for 63rd place after shooting 87-83-81=251.
The Huskies next competition is the first of two NSIC Conference Tournament rounds to be played Oct. 4-5 at the Hastings (MN) Country Club.
