Husky Football Team Falls to UMD, 31-7

Duluth, Minn. –  The University of Minnesota Duluth posted a 31-7 Homecoming win over St. Cloud State Saturday afternoon in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division game in Duluth. Both teams entered the game with a 3-0 record in the North. Ninth-ranked Minnesota Duluth prevailed and improved to 7-1 overall, 7-0 in the NSIC and 4-0 in the North. It was the Bulldogs 17th straight NSIC win. The Husky loss ended a four game win streak and dropped their record to 4-4 overall, 4-3 in the NSIC, and 3-1 in the North.

Minnesota Duluth wide receiver D.J. Winfield scored two touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs who led 17-0 at halftime. St. Cloud State junior running back Dante Steward (Milwaukee, WI) scored for the Huskies on a one-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs started the opening drive on the Huskies 38-yard line after a D.J. Winfield opening kickoff return of 54 yards. UMD drove the field and found the end zone on a nine-yard pass play from Chase Vogler  to Winfield at 11:17 to take the 7-0 lead.The Huskies were hindered by two penalties and two quarterback sacks in their opening drive and were forced to punt the ball.  A one-yard run by Vogler at 5:54 gave the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead and that would be the score at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter Minnesota Duluth  drove to the three-yard line but a pass by Vogler was intercepted by senior linebacker Gyangelo Bradden  (Minneapolis)in the end zone. The Huskies were not able to capitalize and were forced to punt. UMD increased the lead to 17-0 on a David Nadeau 26-yard field goal at 5:46 of the second quarter.

The Huskies started the second half on offense but the UMD defense held and St. Cloud State was forced to punt. The Bulldogs took the ensuing drive 76 yards and scored on a 12 yard Winfield run to take a 24-0 lead. That would be the only score of the third quarter.

Justin Neumann caught a two-yard pass from Vogler  at 13:43 of the fourth quarter and the UMD lead was 31-0. Steward’s touchdown run capped a 7 play, 53 yard drive that lasted 3:17 on the clock.

Game Notes:

The Bradden interception was the first of the season for him and the first of his career. The Huskies have intercepted at least one pass in five straight games.

Steward’s touchdown was his second of the season. He finished the game with five carries for 34 yards

Sophomore defensive back Tony Kubes (New Prague) had a game high ten tackles, his second highest total of the season.

The Huskies gained 193 yards of total offense while UMD rolled up 409 yards including 276 on the ground.

The Bulldogs have won 17 straight NSIC games, and are the defending NCAA Division II and NSIC Champions.

UMD running back Isaac Odim rushed for over 100 yards in a school record eighth straight game. He had 21 carries for 116 yards.

St. Cloud State junior receiver Fred Williams (Milwaukee) led all players with six receptions for 50 yards.

St. Cloud State sophomore running back Brandon Geiss (Shorewood, IL) suffered a leg injury in the first half and did not return to the game.
