St. Cloud, Minn. - On a snow covered field, the St. Cloud State football team torched the University of Minnesota, Crookston 65-7 Saturday afternoon in front of a Homecoming crowd of 3,847 at Husky Stadium.
The Huskies (4-3, 4-2 NSIC) scored the third highest point total in school history and put up 372 total yards to earn its fourth straight Northern State Intercollegiate Conference win.
It took St. Cloud State just one play to get on the scoreboard and did not let up as the Huskies found themselves up 20-0 with over 12 minutes to play in the first quarter. The offense would go on to score in its first six drives of the game.
Senior Mitch Watkins (Jerseyville, Ill.) hooked up with junior Fred Williams (Milwaukee, Wis.) on a 67-yard strike on the first offensive play from scrimmage and the score was followed just 19 seconds later, as sophomore Matt Hansmann (Forest Lake) intercepted a Golden Eagle pass and took it 45 yards to the end zone.
Minnesota, Crookston then turned the ball over on its next possession on a mishandled punt snap. Two plays later, Watkins connected with senior Cody Anderson-Norblom (Minneapolis) on a 20-yard touchdown pass with 12:03 to play in the first quarter.
The Huskies went on to score 34 points in the first quarter and followed it with 21 more in the second to set a school record for most points in a half with 55.
The St. Cloud State defense also did its part, sacking both of the Minnesota, Crookston quarterbacks six times. The defense also held the Golden Eagles to 93 total yards of offense, while scoring two touchdowns on interception returns.
Watkins was 7-for-9 for 135 yards and two touchdowns, while junior Dante Steward (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the team with 79 yards on 10 carries in the game.
Redshirt freshman Brad Wignes (Marseilles, Ill.) led the team with eight solo tackles, while junior Thomas Gruis (Clear Lake, Iowa) recorded eight total tackles, three tackles for a loss, one sack and one pass break up.
St. Cloud State will take its momentum on the road next weekend, as they take on the Division II 2008 National Champions Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (5-1, 5-0 NSIC) at 1 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.
