Husky Football Wins Third Straight, 38-27 at Bemidji

Bemidji, Minn. – St. Cloud State posted a 38-27 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win at Bemidji State University Saturday afternoon in Bemidji. The win was the third straight for the Huskies who improved to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the NSIC. With the loss Bemidji  State is 4-2 overall, 3-2 NSIC.

St. Cloud State senior quarterback Mitch Watkins (Jerseyville, IL) threw for 215 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Huskies. The four TD passes equals his career high. Junior wide receiver Fred Williams (Milwaukee, WI) and redshirt first year receiver Tyler Allery (Dunseith, ND) each caught two touchdown passes.  Sophomore running back Brandon Geiss (Shorewood, IL) rushed for 64 yards and one touchdown in the hard fought game played on Bemidji’s Homecoming.  Sophomore defensive back Matt Hansmann (Forest Lake) had a team high ten tackles in the game.

Bemidji State rolled up 341 yards of total offense and turned the ball over two times. The Huskies gained 264 yards in total offense with 215 of those yards through the air. Bemidji State had 221 passing yards. The Huskies did turn the ball over on an interception. BSU quarterback Lance Rongstad rushed for a game high 96 yards and one touchdown. The Beavers Jake Anderson led all players with 16 tackles and three quarterback sacks.

Game Notes:

Senior quarterback Mitch Watkins (Jerseyville, IL) started the game eight of eight in pass completions, and finished the first half 11 of 13 passing with three touchdown passes. Watkins finished the game 18 of 25 for 215 yards and four touchdown passes which equals his career high.

Redshirt first year Tyler Allery (Dunseith, ND) caught his third and fourth touchdown passes of his collegiate career, the first a 13 yard pass play that tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter, and the next a 43-yard pass play that gave the Huskies a 35-20 lead early in the second half.

Senior linebacker and co-captain Paul Denne (St. Cloud) returned to the line-up for his first game since playing at Maine in the second game of the season. Denne made his presence know when he blocked Bemidji State’s PAT in the second quarter. He finished the game with five tackles

Junior wide receiver Fred Williams (Milwaukee, WI) caught six passes for 67 yards in the first half and two touchdowns. He finished the game with eight catches for 86 yards and the two touchdowns.

Sophomore running back Brandon Geiss (Shorewood, IL) rushed for 64 yards and one touchdown.

Sophomore defensive back Matt Hansmann (Forest Lake) collected a career high ten tackles and his first collegiate interception.  He returned the interception 50 yards and also had a tackle for loss.

Bemidji State took the opening drive 79 yards on five plays that ended with a 47-yard Lance Rongstad touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead a little over two minutes into the game. The Huskies tied the game on the next drive when quarterback Mitch Watkins found Tyler Allery in the end zone on a 13-yard pass play. SCSU went ahead of the Beavers after a BSU snap went over the punters head and the Huskies had the ball on the nine-yard line. Three plays later the Huskies scored on a Watkins to Fred Williams pass play and led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In second quarter action, Watkins found Williams on a six yard play to take a 21-7 lead. Bemidji answered with a touchdown pass of their own, a nine-yard play from Lance Rongstad to Josh Henningson. The Huskies Paul Denne blocked the point after kick and the Husky lead was trimmed to 21-13. Five minutes later, SCSU running back Brandon Geiss lined up to take the snap and ran four yards for the touchdown and a 28-13 lead. With 1:34 left in the half, Bemidji State connected on a pass play, this one from quarterback Derek Edholm to Brian Leonhardt and the half-time score was 28-20.

St. Cloud State took the opening drive of the second half and quickly found the end zone. Watkins hit Allery for the second time in the game on a 43-yard pass play and the Huskies increased the lead to 35-20. Bemidji answered on their next possession with a 25-yard pass play from Edholm to Kroeplin at the 9:18 mark. The Huskies and Beavers exchanged possession the rest of the quarter.

The Huskies were on the favorable side of a roughing the kicker call on their first drive of the fourth quarter. The result was a 15 play, 51 yard scoring drive that took 7:22 off the clock as Tyler Aldridge kicked a 22-yard field goal to increase the Husky lead to 38-27.
