Saturday, September 26, 2009

Fayette, Iowa  –  St. Cloud State scored a season high 57 points and gained a season high 583 yards in a 57-10 Northern Sun Intercollegiate  Conference (NSIC) win at Upper Iowa University on Saturday afternoon in Fayette, Iowa. The Huskies improved to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the NSIC. Upper Iowa dropped to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the NSIC.

The Husky defense set the tone in the first half, stopping Upper Iowa on it’s opening drive as senior linebacker Gyangelo Bradden (Minneapolis) intercepted the Peacocks, setting up the Huskies first scoring drive. Seven different players scored touchdowns for the Huskies and  junior  running back Stefan Geissler (Cadott, WI) scored twice, on a pass play and a rush.

St. Cloud State has gained over 500 yards in back to back games as the Huskies finished off Northern State last Saturday at home with 556 yards.

Upper Iowa scored on a 32-yard Jason Price field goal in the first quarter and quarterback Craig Burns hit John Baldwin on a 25-yard pass play for a third quarter score. The Peacocks finished the game with 324 yards of total offense.

Senior linebacker Gyangelo Bradden (Minneapolis) and senior safety Brian Kampa  (Sartell) each had a first quarter interception for the Huskies. The Bradden pick was his first of the season, first of his career as a Husky, and set up the Huskies first scoring drive of the game. Kampa’s pick was his first of the season, second of his career and set up the Huskies third scoring drive.

Sophomore linebacker Tony Kubes (New Prague) recorded his first collegiate interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter. Kubes picked off Upper Iowa and returned it 54-yards for the touchdown. The last Husky to return an INT for a score was David Kamin on Oct. 8, 2008, a 41-yard return against Minnesota Duluth.

The Huskies scored 28 points in the first quarter. Until today’s game the Huskies had scored a total of 12 first quarter points this season.  St. Cloud State had averaged 22.8 points per game this season and surpassed that average in the first quarter.
